no.12: Porky Minch - EarthBound/Mother
Something I pride myself on is always giving credit where it's due, even if I don't like something. Save for extreme situations I always try to not count something out entirely just because I don't like it. One such case would be Nintendo's EarthBound/Mother.
Now that I've sufficiently pissed off everyone for not liking EarthBound, I must stress that I only dislike it in terms of gameplay. It's a bit too awkward and clunky for me to really enjoy. As a concept I really enjoy it though and I think it has a lot of memorable charm that I wish I could enjoy more. I just don't find it a fun experience to play!
So why go out of my way to add in a character from EarthBound? Well as stated, I think the game has a lot of charm and most of that comes from the plucky characters that inhabit its world. One such character being one of its main antagonists, Porky. (or is it Pokey?) He's sort of a fully realized I. M. Meen. A character that you could just push over, but you should never underestimate him because he'll stab you as a warning. He was Eric Cartman before there was even South Park!
I've always found him to be a delightful little shit and given his role in the series as a whole, I find him to be more the main villain than Giygas. He's a character that simultaneously does and doesn't deserve representation and yes, if I must say it, Porky for Smash! All-in-all while I find EarthBound to be a flawed game, I think it's very deserving of love and I feel I should give it the respect it's due.
