The hum of the Great Fox’s engines pulsed through the metal walls like a heartbeat. Falco Lombardi leaned against the bulkhead, pistol in hand, the blue of his feathers catching the sterile light of the corridor. He’d been through worse—asteroid fields, ambushes, and more dogfights than he could count—but this mission had a different edge to it. Command wanted a clean extraction. Falco, as always, planned to improvise.
“Fox plays by the book,” he muttered under his breath, flipping the safety off with a sharp click. “I write my own.”
The hatch hissed open. Beyond it stretched the derelict cruiser, dark and silent but crawling with hidden motion. A perfect playground. His wings twitched as adrenaline surged; he thrived in chaos. A flash of movement—one clean shot—and the corridor flared with light. The mercenary didn’t look back to see the result. He didn’t have to.
Another day, another scrape with death. But that’s how Falco liked it. After all, out in the cold silence of space, the only thing louder than the roar of his blaster was the thrill of flying free.
