Black Hole: The Book of Iratus, Episode 105

Chapter 1041

The next morning, Iratus walked through Lionhearth to see how things were progressing. War was on the horizon—three days at most before it began—and he needed everyone ready. The village hummed with activity: blacksmiths hammering at steel, hunters stringing bows, soldiers drilling in the training yard.

But then a stir rose near the front gate. People moved quickly, pointing and murmuring. Iratus followed their eyes and saw a convoy rolling up the road—military Humvees and even a heavy truck, dust trailing behind them.

The lead truck braked just outside the gate. From the cab leapt Carman, the rabbitman, grinning wide, his ears perked high.

Carman: "As promised—spoils of war!"

He slapped the truck's side and waved Iratus over.

Carman: "Come on, I'll show you what we pulled out of that abandoned city."

Iratus raised an eyebrow.

Iratus: "And the remaining… whatever they were called?"

Carman shook his head, ears drooping slightly.

Carman: "That tower you mentioned? Completely gone. The bodies are still there, but the structure vanished."

Iratus exhaled slowly.

Iratus: "For the best, perhaps."

Carman led him and a small crowd toward the truck's cargo bay. The villagers gathered quickly, curious, their voices buzzing with anticipation.

Salvos rubbed his hands together.

Salvos: "Come on, big money."

Bai Xue folded her arms, tail flicking.

Bai Xue: "We risked our lives for that place. There better be some good loot."

Carman climbed into the truck bed, tugging at a heavy tarp.

Carman: "We struck gold—or at least, oil. We make diesel, sure, but we found petrol by the canister. Whole stacks of it. And not just that—Jet Propellant 8. Exactly what these military Humvees guzzle down."

He kicked one of the stacked fuel drums for emphasis. A murmur of approval rippled through the crowd.

Next came crates of gear. Iratus was handed compact water purification devices and neatly packed medical supplies—salves, bandages, antibiotics.

Carman: "Also ammo. Lots of it. I'll need to check your weapons first—hard to tell with guns from multiple worlds if the calibers line up. But odds are good."

Iratus nodded as several Lionhearth folk hurried forward to claim sacks of cement, already imagining the fortifications they could reinforce.

Carman: "The Humvees themselves are yours. Keys included. Oh, and we brought bikes too—nothing fancy, but useful for scouting and running messages without burning fuel."

More treasures followed: coffee beans that sent an intoxicating smell through the air, tins of sweets that made children cheer, stacks of books in various languages, even a case of jewelry that drew gasps from some of the women.

Iratus smiled faintly, arms folded.

Iratus: "Clearing out that infested city was certainly worth it."

Salvos slung his bow over his shoulder, smirking.

Salvos: "I already bet on our military strength being higher than Purple City's, but with this haul? Ammo, vehicles, fuel—we just closed every shortcoming we had."

The people of Lionhearth cheered, voices echoing off the timber walls.

Chapter 1042

Three days passed in tense silence. No messengers from Purple City or the coastal settlement came, no attempt at negotiation. Just steady patrol reports: the coastal camp still stood, its people digging in, building more huts, and raising crude barricades from driftwood and stone.

Iratus knew what that meant. They had chosen defiance.

At dawn, two Humvees and a truck rolled out of Lionhearth. Inside were some of the settlement's best—Resolutio with her maul, Otiosus sharpening his rapier during the ride, Sagitta nervously fletching arrows with a tight grin. Salvos sat in the passenger seat, scanning the horizon, while Astrid reviewed her translations.

The coastal air grew sharp with salt as they drew near. The sound of the ocean rode the wind, mixed with the faint clatter of construction. When the convoy stopped, Iratus stepped down first, longsword at his hip, cloak snapping in the breeze.

Iratus: "Alright. Helmets on. Shields ready. We take them alive if possible. This is our land, not a graveyard."

The squad moved into formation and advanced.

The camp was awake. Men and women with bows and spears scrambled to their barricades, voices rising in alarm. A handful already notched arrows. One of them—the same man who had spoken before—stepped forward, raising his weapon defiantly.

Man: "We told you what would happen if you came back!"

Astrid translated for those behind her.

Iratus raised a hand.

Iratus: "One last chance. Drop your weapons and return to Purple City. No blood needs to be spilled here."

For a heartbeat there was silence. Then the man spat on the ground.

Man: "Purple City goes where it pleases!"

The first arrow flew. Then another. Then a volley.

Iratus: "Shields! Hold!"

The squad ducked behind armor and vehicles as arrows rattled uselessly against steel and gambeson. The order for restraint hung heavy, but each soldier gripped their weapons tighter.

Resolutio growled, eyes burning.

Resolutio: "So this is their choice."

Iratus: "Advance. Push the line. Capture who you can—show them Lionhearth's strength."

With that, the squad surged forward.

---

Chapter 1043

Iratus ordered his formations, with Resolutio leading the front of the squad. Otiosus, Echo, and Completio skirmished against the humans and other man-things. Sagitta loosed a few arrows, while Salvos fired one of Lionhearth's older rifles. They aimed not to kill, but some enemies would not be in good shape afterward. Confodere, Collaboratio, and Malignitas made up the main force, while Astrid and Disputatio focused on capturing combatants alive.

One human was about to throw an explosive device before Salvos shot him. Another man tried to flank the squad, but Echo used his shield to pin him before dragging him down with his sharklike teeth. Collaboratio—Vesper's mate—had to fall back from several wounds, but Completio, one of the prisoners rescued from the hot tower, covered his retreat.

A nixman broke from the fight and charged straight at Iratus, shouting about a duel. The clash was over in seconds. The nixman swung a heavy single-edged blade with brute force, but Iratus fell into his favored high guard stance. One deflection and counter later, the nix was disarmed and left at Iratus's mercy.

Within minutes, the entire settlement was subdued. Prisoners were hauled into the vehicles, while Confodere and Salvos oversaw the looting of the camp for the rest of the day. The captives were taken to a makeshift prison on the border with Purple City, where they would remain until the next trade convoy arrived.

It was fourteen days later—day 119—when that convoy finally came. Near dusk, Iratus received the report.

Salvos: "Well, it happened."

Iratus: "About time. So, how did it go down?"

Salvos: "After telling the traders what happened, it looked like they were already expecting something like this."

Iratus gestured toward the dining table, and the two sat down. No food this time—his wives were busy elsewhere.

Iratus: "How so?"

Salvos: "The traders knew about the new settlement. The way they spoke to our captives was… suspicious. I didn't see shock on their faces until they realized the entire settlement had been captured—and not one of them was dead."

Iratus: "A few almost were. I hope you told them how much medicine we used to keep their people alive."

Salvos shrugged.

Salvos: "No. But I did tell them how hard we tried to take them alive. Unfortunately, I was given a dire warning. For the foreseeable future, the traders won't be coming."

The two sat in silence for several seconds before Iratus finally spoke.

Iratus: "All within the predicted margins. Since we assume this was all to create a casus belli, we should be expecting an army soon."

Salvos: "We can still pray that God will make them see reason."

Iratus: "Hope and prayer are good. But better to pray for our soldiers. Soon. It will all be over soon."

---

Chapter 1044

Two days later, Iratus was making a list, determining who could be freed for various war duties.

First, the Rennick family.

Iratus: "So, that's why I need a long-extending border force."

The rabbitman's gray ears twitched. He was the tallest person in all the settlements, yet his aura was calm and peaceful.

Collaboratio: "War is where I draw the line. Leave me to the defenses and domestic duties—those I can manage."

Iratus: "And Vesper?"

Collaboratio: "You can ask, but I've already spoken with her. She should be staying as well. I hope you understand."

Iratus shrugged.

Iratus: "Not everyone needs a spear to help win a war. Someone has to keep Lionhearth running. It makes sense that you two would fill those gaps."

Next, Iratus went to Lost Fire. Certamen of the Lost Quickness and Ardens Ignifera were managing their small coop of rabbits.

Ardens: "Do you think rabbitfolk find eating rabbits… weird?"

Iratus: "I've had enough conversations with rabbitfolk to know they see no similarity between themselves and the animals. In fact, they have more affinity with the sharkfolk from their world than with rabbits. Now, about the border force?"

Certamen: "As long as we have those vehicles—yeah, we're good."

Ardens: "Someone will have to watch little Fulgora while we're on the border, but every spear, bow, and gun needs to be on the frontlines."

Iratus: "Alright. I'll assign the two of you to the border."

Next, House Owleye: Otiosus and Astrid signed up, with Bai Xue remaining in Lionhearth.

The Hotsky family had Inlecebra volunteering. The Malondo family would see Laedere taking his own motorcycle and weapons, insisting on going personally. The Hotbrass family withdrew from combat to focus on their children and local defenses. The Oculi Acuti family sent Confodere.

From the Dark Sky family, Salvos focused on readying the main army, with his wife, Leitmotif, assisting him. Bellum of Winter Winds also stayed with the main force, while Studium and Fuligo remained in Lionhearth, Studium more cautious after recent battles.

Other citizens of Lionhearth also signed up for the border: Echo, Diffido—though the kid was limited to courier duties—Communiquer, Interrogatio, and Completio.

From the farm, Iter and Levi would visit often. From Last Mistake, Malignitas, the one-eyed cat, seemed eager for war.

Iratus set down his pen and reviewed the roster. With the border forces and main army organized, the settlement's defenses were shaping up for the coming conflict.

---

Chapter 1045

Iratus made sure all the equipment was ready and that everyone knew the battle plans, though Resolutio insisted on running through them every day. After one such lesson, Iratus sighed and stepped forward as everyone else left the kitchen.

Iratus: "A shame we can't implement all these ideas—we just don't have the manpower."

The goat woman shifted to another map, studying it before looking back at him.

Resolutio: "In war, everywhere can be a battlefield, but we keep focusing on the road. Think of the enemy settlement on the coast—how did they get there? We didn't see them because there's more than just roads."

Iratus: "What if we patrolled a triangle—Rise, Last Mistake, the farm, and Lionhearth? It wouldn't give us much wiggle room, but at least we could respond quickly and keep better overwatch."

Resolutio: "Oh, now you like my idea? Still, it's not possible. We've got maybe a hundred fighters at best, and we can't strip farmers and ranchers from their work. It's fine—we've got vehicles, and within hours we'll know what's happening between us."

Outside, Salvos led a training session, making the few with firearms double-check their ammo and aim. Leitmotif had set up training dummies beyond the village walls, and together they guided the group out for drills.

Resolutio: "Still, I've fought worse odds—and won against worse. The only problem is firearms and cars aren't my specialty. When I died, my planet didn't even have gunpowder. But we can still follow my old plans. Pull the classic 'cross the river, later losers' maneuver."

Iratus: "From when you lived on your planet?"

Resolutio: "Yeah. Ironic that I'd end up making a similar plan here."

Iratus: "That reminds me. It's been a few years now, and I've heard you on so many subjects… I've been wondering—who are you really?"

The goat woman smiled.

Resolutio: "Resolutio. Who else?"

Iratus: "Yes, but—?"

Resolutio let out a long breath.

Resolutio: "I suppose covering my greatest failure doesn't mean much in the Nexus Prime—or even in Lionhearth. Me? I was just a normal girl, destined to be married off because my parents didn't want inheritance disputes."

She folded up the maps and prepared to leave.

Resolutio: "Unfortunately, I found myself in the wrong place at the wrong time."

---

Chapter 1046

The goat woman began her story.

Resolutio: "I said who I wanted to marry, but my parents claimed they knew better. They paired me with a man I could never love. I was told children would make my life better. They didn't—though maybe in better cultures I would have loved mine. Instead, I was forced to produce children I didn't want and was told to smile about it."

Resolutio paused, trying to calm herself as old wounds resurfaced with sharp, lingering pain.

Resolutio: "A husband and six sons—all of them treated me like an idiot because I was a commoner and they were a class above me. I had no rights, because my birth was considered proof of my inferiority. Lucky for me, in some random war for our state, I lost all six sons. As for my husband—terrible disease took him. I didn't like being alone, but at least I was free."

By now, several of Lionhearth's folk had stopped their tasks, listening to her life story in silence.

Resolutio: "I hated my government and funded any group that opposed them—non-terrorist ones, obviously. But then came the fateful day. I mixed up a location, thought I was walking into a fundraiser for a bathhouse. Wrong bathhouse. Worse, I walked in on two business tycoons making some shady deal. How shady? Shady enough that they killed my closest confidant—my little sister. I was framed and thrown into the arena. The first woman forced into the blood matches."

She gave a short huff, half-smile, half-bitter laugh.

Resolutio: "In my brief freedom, I'd trained with weapons, hoping a revolution might come. Even with only scraps of self-taught skill, I won those matches—probably because no real fighter wanted to be seen in a blood sport, and no one would waste years training a warrior just for garbage entertainment. I fought trash, and killed trash. But that wasn't how my government saw it. I was a commoner and a woman mocking their god by not dying. Someone warned me they were planning a public execution, and I figured—if no revolution was coming, then it was time to start killing people myself."

She shook her head.

Resolutio: "Of course, then I realized I was up against the military. The slaves and lower class who fought beside me—sometimes we won—but once I reached the border, I tried to cut my losses. The rest of the army was still at home, ready to crush us."

Her jaw tightened, eyes flashing with anger.

Resolutio: "But the poor, the wronged, the enslaved—they looked at me and asked for the next battle. I knew my little rebel army could never win, but I had hope too. For a year we harassed the military, until I unveiled my greatest plan. I hired local fishermen to ferry us across the river, bypass the main force, and strike the capital while it was exposed."

She shook her head again, first in anger, then in grief.

Resolutio: "The battle began—and my plan worked. But I'd paid in advance, and that's why I lost. The fishermen never showed. Everyone I've met in the Nexus Prime has a hole in their memory. No one remembers their death. But I do. I remember my allies fighting until the last of them was cut down. I remember felling so many enemy soldiers that they retreated, even as my army lay dead. I remember the battle dragging into the night, my last breath, and the exact instant I reformed in the Nexus Prime. I hate knowing how badly I failed them. But truthfully? I'd fight to the death to remember it. Maybe that's why I remember every second."

There was a heavy silence.

Iratus: "Wow. You sound like a legend."

Resolutio: "I've met other goatfolk and squirrelfolk who told me my name became an honor title—Resolutio, ‘Released from bonds.' I rattled their armies, their culture, their pride so badly that I became a legend. And now, here I am in the Nexus Prime, with another war about to break out. I guess God wants me to etch my name into this world's history too. Well then—to the Lord above. Bring it."

---

Chapter 1047

Twenty-five days later—day 146 of the seventh year—the message came. First, reports of troops amassing on the border. Then, the official declaration of war: The War for a Monsterless Land.

Salvos: "What does that even mean? Do they think we're monsters?"

Soldiers said goodbye to their loved ones as messengers rode for the other settlements.

Iratus: "Considering all the actual monsters in the Nexus Prime, I'm not shocked."

Engines roared to life as vehicles were loaded with fuel and ammo.

Salvos: "Monsters are monsters. We have language, culture—we built a God-fearing village."

Iratus: "Gray Masks. Numb Walkers. I could even make the case for the puppets."

Salvos: "You know what I mean. Why 'monsters'? Why not just say they want our resources?"

Iratus: "I've never given them any information on our resources. I think they simply don't want a rival growing on their border."

Iratus took a moment to say goodbye to his wives.

Victoria: "War always seems to find us."

Aestus: "Sorry we're too pregnant to go to war," she joked.

Ignis: "Out of everyone who's fought Lionhearth, Purple City feels more tragic than heroic."

Iratus: "It will certainly be tragic. We won't be leaving any of them alive."

His fourth wife, Resonantia—the only one not currently pregnant—pulled him away.

Resonantia: "We've got to go, love. The vehicles are running hot without us."

The soldiers climbed aboard, engines rumbling as the convoy rolled out toward the eastern farm.

---

Chapter 1048

Iratus waited for a good hour, hoping others would arrive. Rise, of course, would take longer, but everyone else who was expected was already here—Levi, Iter, Malignitas, and even Commercium had joined.

Iratus: "Hopefully, if Rise is sending anyone, they won't be too far behind."

Salvos: "I'd always assumed the city loot was their contribution. It may not be soldiers, but these new vehicles are probably just as good."

Iratus nodded and got everyone moving on to the next stage of the plan.

Iratus: "We're heading out for the second outpost. Let's go, people!"

The doors slammed shut and the convoy rumbled forward. Iratus watched the world roll past outside the window until Salvos drew his attention.

Iratus: "Hm?"

Salvos: "It seems like everything is going according to plan one so far."

Iratus: "We can't know until we meet up with the border patrol. And even then—who's to say this is the whole enemy force?"

The second rally point was an old medieval fortress pressed up against a cliff, with part of the cliff collapsed onto its walls. Useless as a true defensive position, but sufficient as a staging ground.

Two days passed, nerves mounting among the war party. Rise did eventually send a truck full of rowdy men—mostly maintenance workers, but willing fighters nonetheless. For now, everyone waited for more information before moving on to step two.

Inside a half-collapsed room, Iratus bent over a set of crude maps, making rough measurements. Glancing out through a gap in the wall, he saw another string of vehicles pull into the faded fortress grounds. He and many others hurried outside to greet their allies.

Iratus smiled as familiar faces emerged.

Diffido: "Iratus! I was really brave and did my job!"

Iratus: "Perfect. That's our little soldier."

Echo: "Boss, we've got good news."

Otiosus: "The Sweep battle plan is working out perfectly."

Iratus: "Well, don't keep everyone in the dark. What's been happening out there?"

---

Chapter 1049

Echo: "They amassed at least eighty soldiers on the border before declaring their intentions. We set up our dummies and waited to see the results. Well… they had some sort of cannon. Blew up our tower. That was good enough to start the Sweep."

The map was crowded, with so many people leaning in to watch. A single d6 was placed on the border, then moved back and split into two d6s. The enemy was represented by a rough wooden dragon figure.

Otiosus: "To be fair, I gave them one last chance to turn around. Almost got shot. Too bad they fell into our pitfalls. Then, fifteen hours of random hit-and-run strikes later, we've taken down at least fifteen of their people."

Moving the pieces, the d6s shifted back to the fortress while the dragon figure advanced down the road.

Echo: "So that leaves sixty-five of them. They've got a cavalry unit and three cannons. A large section carries crossbows, while an elite-looking squad carries rifles."

Resolutio: "Ha. This is going as expected."

Iratus: "No signs of any split forces?"

Echo: "None. They had scouts, but by the time we started hitting them back, they vanished."

Resolutio: "As soon as you struck their main army and pulled back, it was clear this entire wilderness is rigged. Still, once they regain their bearings, they could send scouts out again."

Iratus: "If everything's proceeding well, then it's time for the first—and hopefully last—major battle."

The map showed the dragon atop the crumbling fortress. Five dice represented Lionhearth's forces. Several plans had been drafted, but one theme was consistent: two squads would engage and lose on purpose, two would monitor the rear, and one would wait at the river, out of sight. The squads would retreat, staging a fake last stand, then board a boat with the maintenance crew running them. One scout team would remain hidden, later rejoining the other five squads to launch the real assault.

Otiosus: "Sniper fire or close support? Once we see the elite troops aim their guns, we'll know. Bullets aren't replenishable. Whatever both sides spend, that's it. Then… they'll all die."

Iratus: "The cannons will have to be taken out if we counterattack. Offensively, we were already planning to abandon our posts, but charging into cannon fire… that's a problem."

Completio: "No telling who's going to make it out of our fake retreat. This… this is really it."

---

Chapter 1050

Iratus: "Forward squads."

Salvos: "To the frontlines, of course."

Resolutio: "This time, everything will work out."

Two dice slammed onto the map.

Iratus: "Flank squads."

Otiosus: "Even with firearms, they can't kill me."

Sagitta: "How many wars will I fight in one lifetime… I mean, two lifetimes?"

Another two dice landed on the map.

Iratus: "Let's go."

The squads moved out—thirty-two soldiers in total, not including the fifth squad. The fifth squad remained behind, while everyone else stayed to guard the home.

Iratus: "We should've brought more soldiers. How were we supposed to know they'd send everyone? Must've lied about their population or something."

Confodere: "Pay it no mind. Sending every last adult male at us only shows their lack of understanding of warfare."

Communiquer: "As if we've seen any tactics from them."

The bunny girl laughed while Salvos rubbed his chin.

Salvos: "Maybe. Hitting their army several times before any real fighting—that's a standard war tactic. Instead of countering it, they just forced themselves forward."

Astrid: "Overwhelming numbers is usually the best tactic there is. In fact, we're fighting downright dirty just to stay alive."

The forces split off, and Iratus climbed into one of the towers, Resonantia by his side.

Resonantia: "It isn't strange, you know."

Iratus: "The enemy's lack of tactics?"

Resonantia: "Battles are fought on the field. Sieges give room to plan and think, while formations and unit maneuvers handle the rest. If this really is most of their manpower… then it probably is."

Iratus gave his wife a loving nuzzle before climbing down from the tower. Together, he and his shark lover moved toward the front lines. The enemy cannons thundered, shaking the air.
