I like the idea that Cream has a sort of rebellious streak in her teens, but that she comes back around as she gets older - just with more self confidence. In this scenario, I would suggest that she's not fighting her mom's wishes for her to go on a date, because she secretly is interested in Tails and finds this to be a good cover to not have to openly admit to him her interest. But you're welcome to read further into this how you'd like! :)
