Of course, that may have been because the area of Houston where I was (the port) had a high Mexican-American population. In fact, I remember that it was one of the Mexicans who took me and a few other guys to lunch at a Mexican restaurant. Maybe that's why they looked at me funny. Of course, I did get my sweet tea but I was told by the guy who took us to lunch that most authentic Mexican restaurants didn't serve sweet tea.
