Last month I decided to figure out what Yume Nikki is (I had thought it was an anime for a while), and it was... a strange experience. While playing it, I was confused and extremely bored. After about an hour of walking aimlessly in garishly coloured levels, I looked up information about the game. I had so much more fun reading about it. The guesses on what it was about, the secrets, the alternate endings, all of it. It was like the internet was personifying something that started so bland. I wouldn't play it again, but I enjoyed it enough in a very roundabout way. After downloading a fan album of music inspired by the levels, this picture kind of happened. I've always had a soft spot for unnerving tales and imagery, despite being easily scared.
I played it too. And with the help of the Internet i was even able to beat the game. I also enjoyed reading through all the interpretations of the game and it´s characters.

Seems like a lot of people agree about it (based on comments from FA and stuff, too). Interesting how a game can be enjoyed outside of itself like that.

You said something about liking unnerving tales and imagery? Have you tried "The Binding of Isaac"? It's hard to get more unnerving than that. As a bonus it has high replay value due to randomization and permadeath. (The permadeath also creates an air of nervousness as you play.) Also, it has a kick-ass soundtrack. Basically, you start the game naked, locked in a basement, and struggling to escape from your mom who wants to stab you to death with her kitchen knife, ("because god told her to do so") and you have to shoot your way through floors of grotesque monsters with your tears.
Yep, odds stacked horribly against you, everything wants to kill you, (and is very good at it too) and the only weapon you have to defend yourself with is your tears. Good luck.
I can always recommend games you. You said something about liking unnerving tales and imagery? Have
