This is not Torture, as torture demands something from those being tortured, like the location to the secret reel base. This is past that, this is control for entertainment - like those illegal MMA death matches of the 70s and 80s. This goes to the level of depravity deeper than the deepest level of hell for continued survival. Win and you get to live another day to fight for to continue on living. Lose and you may end up dead or worse as there are things worse than Death itself.

The premise is that this culture of bugs in control can and do have medical technology to reverse death. Meaning death isn't an escape from this. Meaning the pain, fear, injury, body modification, and betting is for nothing other than entertainment of the bugs and their colleagues. Meaning there is no way OUT of the pain, fear, or injury. It's torture for entertainment. And I think that's the scariest thing about all this. The bugs embody the worst of any society, that has the option to be better, but CHOOSE to be worse.

Eh, the media greatly exaggerates how lethal the Gladiator fights were. Those were professional athletes fighting in service to a Lanistae, and as a result they rarely had battles to the Death. They had referees to oversee the fights, and they usually ended when one combatant was injured or just surrendered. A lot of Gladiators had lengthy careers, fandoms, and even sponsor deals.
