well, he's not exactly wrong...Mira has potential to grow into a competent leader, and her personal power is indeed great, but shes got a temper on her, that plus her mild self entitlement being the Tree's adopted daughter is not a great combination. Leo is skilled, but hes dumb muscle and only know one way to deal with problems, hit them really hard until they are no longer problems...that inflexibility combined with his need to avenge his mother and be seen as stronger than his father is a dangerous combination that could very easily get him killed when, not if but when, he bites off more than he can chew. Chili does have skills in a Support capacity, or at least she knows in theory how it's all supposed to work, but she lacks experience and still has much to learn. Tristan might be a thief, but thats only because he has a heart of gold that leads to him being manipulated by others on the regular, and his self esteem is pretty much in the crapper as a result. as for Nigel, he's got his problems, but most of the blame for than can be laid squarely at the feet of his parents and their high expectations of all their children being perfect right out of the gate just because of the family history. the Tree knew that Nigel wasn't ready yet when he was presented to her, and she still encouraged him to improve to the point that he would be, but that wasn't good enough for his parents to overlook him being a 'failure' and then refocusing all their attention on his younger brother, something that Nigel blamed the Tree for, and why would he not? he was just a child.
so, yes, this team of Knights is a motley crew, almost certain to fuck up more than once before they get their acts together and save the world...

I mean, Nigel, he wasn't lying. Also, for Nigel, I didn't even know that he was a guardian. At one time I thought he was just homeless for the most part. Also, poor Alexander with those expressions on his face is, as if he wants to go to the tree and ask her WTF woman?

he was a candidate, from one of those "every generation has proudly served" families, they prepped him as best they could, but he got rejected because "living up to my family's expectations" was not a passing motivation.
that was when he got dropped by his parents, who kept his little brother too busy preparing him to keep any bond between them going. he could have retried, and probably passed, but he didn't see anything worth the effort around himself.
honestly not sure why he is even sticking around though, his parents were not the only ones that abandoned him, there were more adults in town.
