Genuinely, this is not a bad character design. I feel like every other character nowadays has sparkly rainbows or multiple pairs of wings and horns, or is some imaginary hybrid. If that's someone's thing, that's fine. Everyone gets to be creative in their own way. But I feel these kind of designs are more and more common because there's this subconscious idea that if your character design isn't super busy, very complex, or extremely vibrantly colored, then it's a boring, dull, or uncreative design. That's not true. Characters designs can less busy and still be very good. You don't need to change anything about this character's design. It doesn't "hold up," it's just a good character design. It looks like a character design I'd see in a professional manga or comic or something.

I think overly complex designs were more popular back in the mid 2000's early 2010's! With the whole scene esthetics and sparkledogs era, I feel like that's when I saw that kind of very busy designs the most 🤔
I think most of the "overly designed" characters I see nowadays are from newer people who feel like they need to be very unique in order to stand out, but then turn to something more "simple" after a while.

I think you're right, but also I think it's the fact that the more complex and flamboyant a OC design is the harder the details are to keep up with. By the time you have 3 or 4 super complex characters, and they start appearing together it's just really hard to keep it all up. If every character is hyper uniquely designed it's a mess to keep up with everything, where as it's much easier if you have each character be unique in ways that aren't just flashy complex body design but rather having one or two unique or exotic physical feature, but different styles and personalities that show in fashion, body language and expressions. I don't think unique character designs are bad, they're cool, some people make some amazing ideas. I just feel like I see a lot characters that look like if they were digimon or pokemon their next stage would look like some biblically accurate angel thing. Again, that's really not a criticism, it's just the more complex something is the more details there are to have to get right. People end up making it unnecessarily harder on themselves and that can help contribute to burn out. New artists usually pick up on that fairly quickly, usually, and scale back to more relatable characters that have more down to earth designs.

I do have a bias towards easy-to-remember designs myself. I tend to think about how hard/easy it'd be to do a comic/animation featuring the character when creating new characters so I don't like adding intricate details.
