It was for Circuits class, we use complex (imaginary) numbers to help model voltage, current, and resistance in a circuit with an oscillating voltage/current source. If you look up "phasor diagram" there are some good videos explaining it. Instead of a y axis, you have the complex plane which somehow helps with this sorta thing
