Y'know, I think if i directed it it would end with all the people dead but with the dogs seemingly alive. Rescuers would come across the burnt out base and find the dogs eating the bodies. As they debate what happened one of the dogs would look up at the camera and a strange light would play about its eyes. Then end credits.

Probably would be one of those long-term mutations. The plague originated on feral hosts that didn't rely on eye and facial cues as much as body language so it wasn't a priority until it jumped to intelligent and sight-oriented bipeds.
