Believe it or not, there is precedence to this. There was a week long "arc" where the characters dream that they keep swapping head with each other. As well as a few quick gags here and there on other media.
Most prominently though and the inspiration for this piece is in a spin-off chapter book, Garfield and the Wicked Wizard.
It's the most attention head swapping has had in the franchise. Mind you, with how close it happens to the end of the book, the most that's done with it is Odie having trouble to move.
