"After the novelty wears off"

At first, it was pretty cool when this lizard-dolphin hybrid found a job where his half-aquatic heritage would be a big help! Needing to hold his breath made the job actually interesting, and with his record being over half an hour, he could even rival some of the cetaceans working there!

...But, everything interesting stops being that way, sooner or later. Now, it's just normal; get his wetsuit on, swim to work, get a breath, then get started. It's helping improve his breath holding, at least, but other than being underwater it's basically just a regular office job.

squirtlerocks07 and I did an RP based on this.

S: it was a typical work day for this strange lizard/dolphin hybrid, he was getting ready for work at his home, however...usually his roommate, a Garchomp, was always asleep the whole time he was getting ready, but this time he was awake! He doesn't even know any of this, so when he sees the lizard/dolphin hybrid get ready and put on his wetsuit, he gets out of bed and walks over to them
"Hey, what are you doing? It's early..."

L: The lizard-dolphin - a lizaphin, he always called himself - looks over at the garchomp as he gets dressed. "Oh hey, didn't think you'd be up so early! Don't mind me, just getting ready for work."

S: "For...work?" the garchomp doesn't work and he's been looking for a job for a while
"Why does your job involve you wearing a wetsuit? Where do you even work?"

L: "I never did tell you what my job's like, huh? I work in an office just off the coast, in that underwater town that's not too far from here. Having some dolphin in me is pretty helpful for that, there isn't much air down there."

S: the garchomp's eyes go wide at what the lizaphin said
"Whaaaa???? Now why would you wanna work some where you can't breathe normally? I mean, not that I'm curious to see what it's like down there, I don't think I've ever experienced something like that before, heh"
the garchomp was pretty bored, usually he'll be just walking around looking for jobs he likes, but that gets old every now and again, and even tho he wasn't the best breath holder, it's better then nothing

L: "I just thought it'd be neat to actually put my dolphin side to good use. I do have permission to bring someone with me, so I could show you around down there if you want. Actually, you've been looking for a job, right? They're hiring right now, so if you like being down there, I could put in a good word for you!"

S: "Really? Well I certainly would like a job...but my breath holding is nowhere near close to yours...I kind of suck at it a little... but then again I'm bored so, maybe I should at least check it out"

L: "Hey, part of the reason I'm so good at it is actually because of this job, it added a good 10 minutes eventually. Trust me, even if you don't end up wanting an underwater job, I think you'll still find it interesting."

S: "It did? Wow... well, I haven't been underwater in a good minute so, I suppose I could come with you and check out what it's like then...just for experiment purposes for now"

L: "Yeah, it'd be neat to show you where I work! Don't worry about getting a wetsuit of your own, that's only really for the people that work there."

S: "Oh, well alright... I still need goggles tho, I probably won't be able to see underwater without them...I'm pretty sure I have a pair laying around somewhere"

L: "Hopefully you do, I don't have any myself since I don't need them. But I can run out and buy some if you don't, I don't mind."

S: the garchomp looks around for a bit, then he finds his pair of goggles and puts them over his forehead for now
"Found them!"

L: "Alright, nice! I'm ready to go now too, so let's head out and I'll take you to that town." The lizaphin grabs his briefcase, waiting for the garchomp to follow him out.

S: "Alright, I'm right behind you" the garchomp follows the lizaphin out of their home

L: After a fairly short walk, the two get to a nearby beach. "Okay, this is the closest we'll get before we have to do any swimming. You've never been to the town down there before, have you?"

S: "No I don't think so... I wasn't even aware that there was a town down there underwater honestly, I think that's kind of cool in a way"

L: "It's actually not all that different from what you'd expect of a normal town, there's just a few air pockets around for people that don't have gills. Hopefully you won't be too intimidated by the depth, it's about 150 feet down."

S: "150 feet?!?! Holy shoot...I've never had to dive down that deep before... I think I may be a little intimidated by that..."

L: "Yeah, I kind of figured you would... But you know how good I am at swimming, I can keep you safe down there no problem. Nothing to worry about!"

S: "I know... but why is it so deep?? Ugh... guess I'll have to try then, as much as it's gonna suck being so far from the surface"

L: "Being deep down definitely takes some getting used to, yeah. Let's just take it fairly slow for now." The lizaphin gets into the water, holding out a hand to the garchomp.

S: "O-ok..." the garchomp takes the lizaphin's hand as they head into the water too, he lowers his goggles over his eyes too, which actually makes him look cute

L: The lizaphin smiles at how cute the garchomp looks, as the two get far enough into the water that they have to swim. "Shouldn't be too long before we're directly above it..."

S: "Oh goodie..." the garchomp wasn't looking forward to this deep dive, but tries to stay positive as they swim out further, eventually they hover right over the place where the lizaphin works

L: "Okay, this is the spot. You ready? Make sure to do some deep breathing for a while, it'll help you last longer. I don't really need to, myself."

S: "I'm scared, but I'm not gonna let this scare me out of this"
the garchomp starts to take some deep breathes to prepare himself for the dive ahead, and after about 6 minutes...
"I think I'm ready now"

L: "Alright, let's head on down!" The lizaphin takes a quick gasp through his blowhole before diving underwater.

S: after a little bit of hesitation, the garchomp takes a deep breath and holds it before diving under to follow the lizaphin

L: The lizaphin smiles up at the garchomp. "Good, I was worried you'd be too scared. Just... Try not to think too much about how far down we're going." Thanks to being half dolphin, his underwater speech is almost perfectly clear.

S: "Ablw mblan...I wiblsh I hblad clblear speblech..." the garchomp was a little frustrated that he can't talk clearly underwater like the lizaphin can, he looks down and notices the depth and gets a little freaked out, but nonetheless he still follows them down, wishing he could speak clearly and not have to do any of this embarrassing bubbletalk

L: "I can still tell what you're saying, don't worry. Hey, maybe if you keep coming down here enough, you'll be able to talk clearly someday!" The lizaphin stays fairly close to the garchomp, hoping to help keep them calm.

S: "Ybleah, bublt stblill iblts anblnoying! I dblont wablnna tblalk liblke thblis!!! Dblo somblething!" the garchomp tries to stay calm as they continue going deeper and deeper, he's getting more scared but tries to not show it

L: "I would if I could... Just, try to pronounce things as clearly as possible. That'll help at least a little, I think."

S: the garchomp then clears his throat a little bit, then tries to speak as clear as he can, doing a surprisingly good job at it
"Testing testing?? Whoa... how did I managed to dblo that??"
they get halfway down to the building, the garchomp's face a little red from the talking

L: "Woah, I didn't think it'd work THAT well! Not quite sure how that's working, but hey, you can talk pretty much perfectly down here now!" The lizaphin still isn't blushing yet, thanks to having a lot more experience than the garchomp.

S: "Maybe it's because I'm technically called the lablnd shark... so maybe that has something to do wiblth it...nonetheless I'm happy, but I feel the sliblght need to breathe so I'm gonna stop talking until we gblet down there"
his voice isn't fully clear but it's clear enough to satisfy him

L: "Yeah, best to keep your air in." It's not a whole lot longer until the two get into the town. Most of the people there are aquatic, some able to breathe underwater and some not, with a few non-aquatic people around as well.

"And, here we are! So, first impressions?"

S: the garchomp looks around the underwater town, a smile forming on his face
"Well...this actually looks pretty nice, e-even if we are so far dowbln..." he glances back at the far surface with a shudder of fear
"And I think I even see non aquatic people hblere too, impressive"

L: "A few people like that do live down here, but really not that many. They mostly just visit. Anyway, how about we head into the office? There's an air pocket at the entrance, so we can catch our breath there."

S: "Oh good, I need a breather" the garchomp's face was more red, grunting a tad bit in strain

L: The lizaphin leads the garchomp into the office building, and sure enough, there's an air pocket right there. He swims up into it to breathe.

S: the garchomp swims up and gasps a bit heavily for air
"Ahh...much better, hey you know so far this isn't too bad, I thought being deeper underwater would really scare me, I guess I'm a tough cookie, heh"

L: "I actually kind of thought so too, but you really are as tough as you look, huh? I'm sure you'd be able to handle coming down here more often!"

S: "I guess sometimes having a friend really does help, and as long as I have you then I probably will be able to handle the deep dives"

L: "Definitely a pretty good thing, in case you end up deciding to work here after all. Hopefully we'd end up having the same shift!"

S: "That'll be great! I would love to be coworkers with you, anyways I feel better now so let's see what this place has to offer"

L: "Yep, I'll show you around, and maybe introduce you to some of my coworkers. Get some deep breaths in you!"

S: "Ok then" the garchomp gets some deep breaths, and after a few minutes he seems ready to go

L: "Alright, let's get going again." The lizaphin holds his breath and dives back down.

S: the garchomp holds his own breath and dives back down as well, this time pinching his nose shut as well, which on top of the goggles this makes him look extra cute

L: The lizaphin lets out a bubbly chuckle as he sees the garchomp looking even more cute. "Never knew you'd look this cute underwater..."

S: the garchomp's eyes go wide at that
"Cute??? That's a new one... how am I cublte? Intimidating is more like it... heh"
he let's a few small bubbles loose

L: "You holding your nose like that, and wearing those goggles... I don't know, it just looks cute. So, if you want to look intimidating, maybe don't hold your nose."

S: "Ugh, I can't help it! It hblelps you keep your air in, I'm gonna keep holblding onto it, maybe nobody will feablr me if I look like this"
the garchomp swims forward to see what this office has in store

L: "Yeah, fair enough..." The lizaphin stays with them. The office is about what one would expect from one that's not underwater, though with some people - Pokemon and anthro animals - swimming around.

S: "Huh... a swimming office, looks peaceful, and I kind of liblke it..."

L: "Well, it's mostly peaceful..." Just after the lizaphin says that, a blue-faced floatzel rushes past, trailing bubbles as they're clearly frantically going for somewhere to breathe.

S: "Oh dear, that floatzel is ibln trouble!" the garchomp sees that they swim past an air pocket and didn't see it with how frantic they are
"I'm sorry but I gotta help them! I hate seeinblg others like this!" the garchomp then swims over, letting some bubbles loose and tapping on the floatzel's shoulder to get their attention, then directs them to an air pocket that they missed, swimming up to it himself and lightly gasping for breath, waiting for the floatzel to come

L: The floatzel looks over, and bolts into the air pocket, gasping heavily. "Th-thanks, I don't know how I forgot this one... Hah, hah..."

The lizaphin surfaces with the two. "Hey, Floatzel! Got a bit carried away again, huh?"

S: "Heh, it seems like it, I hate seeing others who are close to drowning like that, so I knew I had to help you out"

L: Floatzel: "Well, glad you happened to be here, I was going for the one of these at the entrance..." He looks over at the lizaphin. "That garchomp's with you, right?"

The lizaphin nods. "Just showing him around. If it works out, this might not be the last you see of him here!"

S: "Mmhm! It's nice to meet you by the way" the garchomp smiles revealing his sharp teeth, but not in a threatening way of course

L: The floatzel does get intimidated by that briefly, but quickly relaxes again. "It's nice to meet you too, I've never met a garchomp before! Love those goggles you've got, by the way."

S: the garchomp blushes at that
"Really? Aww thanks! It does make me look kind of cute in a way so I don't look so intimidating"

L: Floatzel: "Yeah, I think they're a big help in making sure people won't be scared of you."

Lizaphin: "He did say he doesn't want to look TOO cute, though."

S: "Yeah, I don't wanna look overly adorable, just cute enough so that way I don't look too scary you know"

L: Floatzel: "Makes sense, yeah. So, what are you thinking of this place so far? Must be weird to be in an underwater office building."

S: "It is weird I'll admit but I kind of like it! It's peaceful and my friend works here and all so, I'm liking the experience so far!"

L: Floatzel: "I really enjoy being here too, the water makes carrying things around easier, and it's a nice way to get some breath holding practice."

Lizaphin: "Plus, we don't really need elevators or stairs either, since we can just swim up and down. We just have big open shafts between the floors, so no one has to waste time waiting."

S: "That's cool! Yeah my friend was just showing me around the place, even tho I was intimidated by the depth at first but I toughed it out"

L: Floatzel: "I know what you mean about the depth, yeah, it used to get me a little nervous too."

Lizaphin: "You'll get used to it, if you keep coming down here."

S: "Yeah hopefully... but I'm feeling fine now, anyways...I wanna meet some more folks and take a look around the place some more"

L: Floatzel: "And I should get back to work, as well. Hope to see you again!" He takes a single deep breath before diving away.

Lizaphin: "There's still more to see here, so yeah, we should keep looking around."

S: "Alright, I'll start getting ready again"
the garchomp takes some deep breathes before holding one in and diving back underwater, holding his nose shut

L: The lizaphin holds his breath and rejoins the garchomp. "Alright, let's see if something else interesting is happening today..."

S: "Yeah, show me where you work! I'm curblious, I'll follow you wherever you gblo"

L: "Sure, my spot's not far from here." The lizaphin leads the garchomp through the building, soon arriving at a fairly small office room.

"And, here we are, this is where I work. Got upgraded to my own room fairly recently!"

S: "Oooh, very nice buddy! I liblke it!" the garchomp swims around the small office room to look at everything in it
"So, what exactly is yblour job? What do you do?"

L: "I help process the information about how the town's air pockets are doing. Things like whether there's more air being pumped in or used, whether there's any issues with the air pockets themselves, stuff like that."

S: "Hmm cool! I like that! Sounds likble you are a hard worker down here... and honestly...even tho I canblt breathble normally, I honestly don't mind being this far underwater, maybe we should talk to your boss and see if I can gblet hired here, I'm sure he's nice"

L: "You've finally decided, huh? Nice! We'll head straight over and see if they're busy. Just keep in mind, they might ask you to show how long you can hold your breath. They didn't for me, since they knew I'd be good from being half dolphin, but I'm not sure for you."

S: "Oh...I don't really wanna publsh myself right now... so I hope they don't ask me to do thblat... I won't like it... but yeah let's go and check it out then and see if your boss is busy"

L: "Hopefully..." The lizaphin leads the garchomp to his boss's office, and knocks on the door. "Hey, boss, you got a bit? Might have a new hire here!"

S: the garchomp was definitely nervous about this, letting out some small bubbles as they wait for a response from the boss, and hoping they are nice and not mean

L: After a moment, an anthro hammerhead shark opens the door. "Yep, I've got some time to see who you've got." He laughs a little as he sees the garchomp. "Well, look at that! A land shark meeting a water shark!"

S: the garchomp's eyes go wide
"No way! I definitely didn't see this coming! I-its niblce to meet you! I'm the person that my friblend here is talking aboublt"

L: Shark: "So, you're looking to work here, huh? I do know that garchomps are air breathers, and that they don't always have especially good breath holding times... What's your record like?"

S: "Umm...I honestly couldn't tell you, I don't go unblderwater often...this is the first time I've been submerged in probably months, maybe even a year"
the garchomp frowned, knowing he'll probably have to show the shark his skills first and push himself and he doesn't want that, his face was a tad bit red

L: Shark: "Then we'll have to test just how good you are. We'll head to an air pocket, then see how long you can hold your breath."

Lizaphin: "I was kind of worried about that, he told me he didn't want to push himself..."

S: the garchomp shakes his head at that
"Uh uh, no...if there's one thing I don't wannbla do is to push myself and feel super low on breath..."

L: Shark: "Well, I can't exactly see how well you'd do here without you doing that. For all I know, you'll end up using too much time on air breaks!"

S: the garchomp sighs out some bubbles
"I really don't wanna have to push mysblelf and risk drowning...it's gonna suck...I don't know what to do..."

L: Lizaphin: "Hey, it's not going to be dangerous!"

Shark: "Yep, you won't be far from air once you want to surface again."

S: "I-i don't know guys...I've nevbler done it before and I'm genuinely scablred... but...I did say I wanna work here so, I guess I'll just have to give it a shot then..."

L: Shark: "I'm sure you'll find it worth the effort. There's an air pocket near here, so we'll head there for this." He starts leading the way to the nearest air pocket.

S: the garchomp follows then eventually he surfaces in the air pocket and lightly gasps for breath
"Alright..."

L: Lizaphin: "I'll stay right next to you the whole time, don't worry. Once you want to surface, I can carry you up if you want."

S: "U-um...ok then...thanks" the garchomp then takes some deep breathes, taking a long time to do so to delay this

L: Lizaphin: "...We shouldn't keep him waiting too long..."

Shark: "Today's at least a fairly slow day, so it's not THAT big a deal."

S: "I-i-i'm sorry! This is gonna be the first time I've ever pushed myself while underwater! Of course I'm gonna be scared for once!"
the garchomp whimpers a bit

L: Shark: "You'll likely end up doing a fair bit of that if you end up working here, so hopefully you'll be able to get used to it..."

Lizaphin: "It's not all that bad, your chest will just get really uncomfortable, and eventually get a burning feeling if you go long enough."

S: the garchomp yelps at the lizaphin's explanation, cowering in fear
"I-i-i don't wanna experience that!! No way!"

L: Lizaphin: "...I probably shouldn't have said that, yeah..."

Shark: "Look, I don't exactly know for sure how bad it gets for air breathers, but I'll try to help you with it too, alright?"

S: the garchomp sighs again, now he really doesn't wanna push himself... he just wants to hold his breath at a comfortable level and not overdue it, but at this point he has no choice
"Fine... I'm gonna hate every minute of pushing myself"

L: Shark: "Even just seeing what you're comfortable with would be helpful, just not quite as much."

Lizaphin: "This should at least be the only time you have to do this..."

S: "Alright, let's get this over with..." the garchomp takes a last deep breath and holds his nose shut before diving back underwater, sitting down and trying to relax and stay calm

L: The lizaphin and shark both dive as well, the shark obviously not holding his breath, and both of them sit with the garchomp.

Lizaphin: "Just try to sit still, that should help you with this."

S: but the garchomp was already so nervous, he was shifting around a lot, unable to keep still as some bubbles escape him

L: Shark: "You okay there?"

Lizaphin: "I'm not sure he's going to be able to stay calm..."

S: the garchomp whines as he's unable to keep calm, worrying he's gonna go too far and drown, he shakes his head no at what the shark just said

L: Shark: "Maybe this isn't going to work out after all..."

Lizaphin: "Should we all just surface again?"

S: the garchomp didn't need to be told twice, he goes up to the surface and gasps for breath, and actually starting crying for his failed attempt
"I just couldn't do it!!! It's so hard to not think about that I'm gonna get close to drowning! But...I wanna try it again, but not get so anxious this time..."

L: Lizaphin: "I'm really not sure how we can help though..." He hugs the garchomp.

Shark: "Yeah, this is harder than I thought it'd be..."

S: "I'm so sorry!! I really wanna work here, I have no job right now and I've been struggling..." the garchomp hugs the lizaphin back
"I think I'm just gonna try it again, maybe you could keep me so I relax more"

L: Lizaphin: "Yeah, maybe me hugging you the whole time will help... We'll have to try that."

Shark: "Hopefully that'll finally work."

S: "Yeah...o-ok then" the garchomp starts to take some deep breathes to get ready again
"This time, I want you to pull me down whenever you think I'm ready, so I don't delay this like last time...just, go slow on that ok?"

L: Lizaphin: "Right, I'll do that. Go ahead and get ready again."

S: the garchomp nods and continues to take deep breathes, eventually he seems ready to go and he holds his breath and pinches his nose again as he waits for the lizaphin to pull him back under

L: With that, the lizaphin holds his own breath and dives, gently bringing the garchomp with him. The shark joins the two once again.

S: with the lizaphin's embrace, the garchomp was able to stay much calmer this time, closing his eyes as he leans into their hug

L: Smiling at how much better the garchomp's doing this time, the shark starts keeping track of how long they're holding their breath.

The lizaphin leans against the garchomp a little as well, watching them to make sure they stay calm.

S: the garchomp hardly let's any bubbles loose with his good friend by his side thos time, he's gonna last a good while here

L: Some time passes as the three wait together, just calmly seeing how long the garchomp will go before they decide it's time to surface...

S: the garchomp keeps going, his face is slightly red, getting a little scared deep down, but he stays calm enough for it to not freak him up yet, a total of 6 minutes passing by

L: Shark: "You're definitely doing well so far, this is promising..."

S: 6 more minutes passes, a total of 12 now, and the garchomp's face is now blue, and he feels this burning in his lungs like the lizaphin said, he whimpers as he feels it, letting out a flurry of bubbles as he doesn't wanna experience this for much longer

L: The lizaphin is starting to blush a little himself now, but he's still calm. "Hang in there... But don't push yourself too far."

S: the garchomp tries to keep it together, but after 16 minutes, he couldn't do it any longer, with his face fully blue he swims up to the air pocket space and gasps heavily for air

L: The lizaphin and shark both surface shortly after, with the lizaphin lightly gasping.

Shark: "16 minutes, that'll work just fine!"

Lizaphin: "Nice! You did it, buddy!"

S: "Hah...hah...hah... well, I guess I did...16 minutes, that's a good record, so...Mr shark, do I get hired??"

L: Shark: "Well, you've proven how dedicated you are by doing that breath holding test even though you were scared, so... Yes!"

S: the garchomp gasps
"Really?? No way!!! Thank you so so much! You have no idea how much this means to me! A-and is it possible that I could have the same work shift schedule as my buddy here? It would really help me more" he wraps an arm around the lizaphin

L: Shark: "Yep, it should be easy enough to get you two on the same shift!"

Lizaphin: "You've finally got a job, that's awesome! And we're coworkers, too!"

S: "Amazing!! Thank you so much again sir, I'll never forget this!" the garchomp was so giddy about having a job, he goes over to hug the shark and smiling warmly at him

L: The shark smiles and hugs them back, then looks over at the lizaphin. "Now, I believe you've been distracted long enough..."

Lizaphin: "Right, yeah, I need to get to work!"

S: "Well, I guess I'll need to get to work myself then huh? Hehe!"

L: Shark: "You could certainly just help out with things around here for now, but at some point we'll figure out a dedicated position for you."

Lizaphin: "Let's hope it's not too different from mine, huh?"

S: "Yeah, I certainly wanna work together with my buddy, that's all I want and I'll be as happy as I can be at this job"

L: Shark: "How about you be an assistant to him for now? I think that would work well."

Lizaphin: "Oh, I'd like that too!"

S: "An assistant? Well as long as he doesn't boss me around, heh... I think that's a good idea!"

L: Lizaphin: "I'll try not to be too annoying about it, don't worry."

S: "Thanks buddy" the garchomp smiles
"Well, I'm ready to get started then!"

L: Lizaphin: "Same here! See you later, boss!"

Shark: "I hope you two have fun together!" He dives away, heading back to his office.

S: the garchomp turns to look at his friend with a smile
"Shall we get to work buddy? I'm all ready to go!"

L: Lizaphin: "Yep, same here! Let's head back over to my office and see what needs to get done today."

S: "Okay!"

and so, after garchomp takes a deep breath, both him and the lizaphin dive back underwater to the lizaphin's office to get some work done together, the garchomp is so happy he finally has a job and is looking forward to working along side his good friend
