Chapter 1: prologue

Krystal was a very quirky woman, everyone in Starfox agreed on that.

Maybe "quirky" was the term they used to refer to her instead of calling her "a weird" because they couldn't find another word to describe Krystal.

They didn't judge her, but they tried to understand her... or at least they attempted to. That was what James McCloud observed while studying each member of Starfox.

In the early days since Krystal joined the Starfox team, Falco Lombardi also made his return too.

In the weeks of living together, everyone witnessed the eccentricities of living with a woman literally raised in the jungle, completely unaware of table manners, she ate with her bare hands without a trace of femininity that they expected to see in a woman. It was a shocking image for them to observe how the beautiful blue fox propped her elbows on the table with a hunched posture, using her hand as a spoon to scoop up mashed potatoes or fruit salad with yogurt and granola flakes like a complete caveman.

Falco was the only one who smiled broadly, amused and fascinated, indifferent to the shock of his companions. The blue falcon set aside his fork, took off his gloves and propped his elbows on the table, and plunged his hand into his own plate of food, beginning to eat like a savage, imitating the only girl in the group, also earning incredulous looks from Fox, Slippy, and Peppy, who could not believe what they were seeing before their eyes. James smiled at the scene, amused and touched.

It could be said that Falco was the only team member who from the beginning took Krystal's eccentricities more naturally, accepting her just as she is. Maybe this was because the falcon had significant experience interacting with many different species from other nationalities during his travels as a mercenary for “ I am a lone Wolf, always acting on my own” behavior, making it evident that the other members of Starfox were from a more closed interactive circle.

An unbreakable friendship quickly blossomed between Falco and Krystal, both connecting with a better dynamic that surprised the rest of the Starfox members. In the case, Fox, the interactions between the two vulpines were very different, one being poorer and more embarrassing, despite the fact that Fox had been in love with the cerinian telepath since the very first moment he saw her. Fox truly loved Krystal, a lot; it was no secret among the Starfox members, nor even to Krystal herself.

The only painfully obvious problem was that Fox and Krystal did not share the same hobbies or interests to bond over; they lacked chemistry as a couple... Nevertheless, they tried, because Fox's feelings were reciprocated by Krystal, with a clear romantic affection directed towards the red fox.

And then there were the awkward moments... too awkward.

Krystal's innate ability to pick up on thoughts, invading the mental privacy of others whether with their consent or not, made anyone nervous, even Fox himself... This, combined with the clash of cultures.

Krystal's 'quirky,' to put it another way, were in Peppy's opinion marked as uncivilized, and her lack of manners was another point he mentioned. An example would be how Krystal had the bad habit of wiping her hands on her uniform pants after finishing a sandwich, or when she would loudly speak out when she picked up someone's thoughts, believing they were starting a conversation with her when they were not. In most of those instances, Fox ended up being the victim, followed by Slippy, who would get them into embarrassing situations.

James McCloud burst out laughing as he witnessed his son's reactions, wanting to flee from embarrassment, or Slippy's nervous laughter, not knowing what to say in response to Krystal's sudden questions.

Krystal had to learn the difference between -starting a conversation- separating it from captured thoughts that were private and not a topic for discussion, but rather something to be thought about and kept to oneself, private, not for external knowledge. It took her quite some time to distinguish between them.

It was weeks of uncomfortable adaptation, but soon they all found themselves gathered around the table having breakfast together and laughing.

Then one particular day while they were having breakfast, they discovered an important detail that had gone unnoticed by most, and it was due to a comment made by Krystal when Falco showed her a magazine on a certain page.

Chewing on her toast, Krystal leaned in, looked at the page, and tilted her head.

-I don't know what it says… ¿could you read it to me? -

It was then that everyone realized that Krystal spoke the common language of Lylat but did not understand the writing, as she learned it as a listener and it was not her native tongue. From that point on, Peppy took Krystal as his student, teaching her reading and writing cornerian language, while Slippy lent her his encyclopedias as a form of reading practice, watching Krystal struggle to spell or read a line with difficulty as she progressed through the page. This process was not quick.

As a show of appreciation, Krystal did the same for them.

Peppy and Slippy broke out in a cold sweat upon seeing the complicated ancient hieroglyphs of Krystal's native language. Falco burst out laughing and accepted the challenge, saying, "¿A third language? ¿Why not?". Fox had a slight knowledge he had acquired during his stay on Sauria. Rob 64 was an excellent learner, being the only one with whom Krystal engaged in long conversations in ceriniano. And James was good at memorizing everything.

During the training sessions, which Slippy often found excuses to skip, and Peppy was exempt from due to his age, the only ones who frequently attended the practice room were Fox, Falco, and Krystal as a way to relieve stress within the Great Fox. As a warrior, Krystal clearly demonstrated her great skill in physical combat, being able to take down both Falco and Fox on more than one occasion, with Falco leaving the training room limping.

Things aboard the Great Fox were relatively well. They completed missions, earned money in their bank accounts, becoming a bit more stable, checked the maintenance and performance of the Arwings, and reviewed the inventory of the pantry.

Still, in terms of economic stability, they continued to fluctuate between red numbers like a ball that bounces up and down, always floating just above the red numbers. All of this was transcribed into the records of the routine maintenance checks conducted by Rob 64 and verified by Peppy and Slippy; these records were then sent to the database of the Cornelian army.

James did not like that.

[No, no, the maintenance of the Great Fox is inefficient, Peppy... these levels do not indicate anything good, you need to fix this part here, do you see it?]

Peppy and Slippy chatted among themselves, ignoring James. The fox frowned and clenched his fists, muttering under his breath. Seeing Peppy heading towards the exit of the control room, James quickly ran to catch up with him.

[Listen to me, you can redirect the energy from the R8 chamber that powers engine B as an alternative to distribute it as a primary power source to the rest of the ship, and you will save 68% of energy; the rest will go to the engines if they were in manual mode! And as always, as on every occasion, no one could hear James's voice. James Mcclooud is only a wandering ghost roaming the Great Fox like a phantom.
