Due to the way the last comic ended, I expect some revenge on the readers.

As an author I am particularly fond of messing with readers heads and emotions, and there's really no better way to do so than repeatedly give them expectation and hope of a happy outcome, then make it fall apart, crush their hopes and have it end in tragedy. And do that not just once, but like a rollercoaster, up and down and up and down, and then one final High-G plunge unto the deck of cold hard realism. In this particular story, such a setup would be straightforward to get into the plot-line. Hint: Title ;)

If I were the author, I would have our Dragonslayer goad the dragon into attacking (triggering the me-first special attack) by messing with his emotions -a - lot! Betrayed love is not only a great setup to throw caution and reason into the wind and attack blindly, this approach also has the potential for great drama, romantic scenes and shattered hopes, aka an awesome story. You'll get all the setup for a happy end, and then a stab in the back - of the reader ;)

Interesting ;)

I assume it has occurred to you, that all the best and most famous stories do not have a happy end. From Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet and its thousands of ripoffs to movie classics like Das Boot. A story isn't really complete and wholesome, unless everyone's fucking dead in the end ;)

Hollywood doesn't like it, though, cause that makes making sequels very hard, and they are so damn profitable ...

Not necessarily, but I can be :)  You know, if someone reads the song of ice and fire, they quickly get used to beloved main characters kicking the bucket like redshirts after only the first or second novel, so eventually the author must come up with a new cruelty - like for example putting the series on hiatus and not delivering a conclusion at all, leaving the readers with a crappy TV adaptation instead ...

Ok maybe bad example, fucking with the readers on that kinda meta level just sucks.

But the point I want to make is to not be too obvious. If the reader can smell the rat from 3 miles away thanks to all the foreshadowing and genre specific tropes, you better put in a completely unexpected twist. Sometimes there's a third option no one saw coming. "Preserving the status quo" like most of the dogchain yanking series do so hard is only important for ongoing series. Standalone stories need closure and a complete ending. Killing the main characters is but one way to do that. Settling into a new status quo that is semi-stable is a real option (stable relationship of sorts) or having them part ways to find new adventures.   I like dark themes though. Vore, guro, etc... so typically the death of one or more main characters is hard to avoid. But that doesn't mean the ending can't have an unexpected twist every so often.

Or you can be mean and end it in a cliffhanger. I have done that too.
