You hadn’t expected your stint as a tester at Aperture Science to go particularly well…
But you never imagined you’d be contending with THIS.
What they pass off as “tests” turn out to just be elaborate, convoluted, demented, and blatantly dangerous obstacle courses.
What’s more, the tests in question involve bizarre, viscous substances that they refuse to describe as anything more verbose than “gel”.
The way the stuff oozes and occasionally bubbles, you wouldn’t be surprised if it ate the skin right off your bones.
But it’s not as though you have a choice, right? You already signed up for this, and came what must’ve been miles below-ground for this. And Aperture is more than capable of making your life hell if you try and back out.
Time to do your duty…
First, they test the white gel. You heard something about moon rocks, but you couldn’t be sure. They seem rather disappointed when nothing happens as you step on it, touch it, land on it. Apparently they have some lofty ambitions with this stuff.
But you just feel lucky to still be alive.
Next, the orange gel. One step onto its surface, and you find yourself sliding across it at a breakneck pace! You scramble to get ahold of yourself, but can only do so much as your body haphazardly slams into a wall.
Your shoulder still aches as you move on to the final part of the course.
A twenty-foot fall looms before you. At the bottom, you can make out a large pile of blue gel.
They tell you to jump. Are they insane??
You’re no physicist, but just looking at it there’s no way it could-
Something shoves you. A wall panel? A pair of hands? No way to know. All you know is you’re in a terror-filled free fall, the shiny blue surface coming at you fast.
You land. A loud squishing sound resounds, then the world goes quiet for a moment.
You open your eyes.
Somehow, you’re alive! And mostly unharmed, no less. The stuff really must’ve cushioned your fall somehow. Your vision’s hazy, but you can at least make out slick blue matter all around you.
You hear the scientists murmuring and grumbling. Apparently this wasn’t supposed to happen. But whatever, at least you’ve lived once again.
Then you hear a gasp. Sounds of confusion, then panic.
You try to get to your feet, but… your bare knees are stuck. What the hell…?
Then you feel it seeping in through your tank top. Creeping up your back, enveloping your legs.
It grips your body. You freeze in response. You want to scream, but your throat just… won’t.
This takes the cake for the scariest thing you’ve experienced so far, and yet you can barely even react.
Something about it just feels… right. It’s utterly disarming.
The gel’s embrace feels tight, unyielding… but snug and secure at the same time. Like a lover’s embrace.
You can’t even feel your aching shoulder anymore.
Your fear evaporates like an ice cube on summer sidewalk. You find yourself starting to grin lazily.
Harsh mechanical whirring echoes through the chamber. It’s the only thing loud enough to reach your senses given the state you’re in.
Regardless, nothing outside of the gel really concerns you right now.
It’s melting your clothes, swallowing up your torso, your limbs… pulling you downward.
The whirring stops. You look up briefly to see an armed turret pointing its laser directly at you.
Too late! You’d let out a chuckle if the gel hadn’t already covered your mouth.
The instant before it opens fire, you feel yourself give in to the gel entirely.
Yes… yeeeeeeees…..
-
“Wh-What the fuck??”
You can’t believe your damn eyes. The test subject just… vanished.
It looked like they sunk into the gel, but… that can’t be possible. It’s barely two inches deep!
The turret lights up the gel’s surface with bullets, but that proves problematic, as only now does the gel start to exhibit its intended properties, causing the gunfire to wildly ricochet right off and spray the walls!
You hastily shut off the turret, and peer closer.
You’ve never seen anything like this in all your career, and that’s saying something as a scientist contracted for this damned corporation.
There’s no clear trace of the subject. Just a slightly larger pile of blue gel.
Had it… consumed them? It didn’t seem like they were in pain. Quite the opposite, in fact…
You start to open up your clipboard to jot down notes, when you hear someone cry out. You immediately fix your gaze back on that puddle.
And what you see chills you to your bone.
Someone… someTHING… is crawling straight back out of it.
Again… impossible. There’s still no room for any living thing larger than a mouse under that shallow surface. But there it is, with four legs and a jagged snout, its entire human-sized form comprised of blue gel…
You feel like you’re going insane. Absolutely none of this was in the simulations!
Whatever this thing is, the turret’s not likely to deal with it cleanly, if the previous attempt was anything to go by… this calls for the incinerator. This could be a golden opportunity for more testing, but something about that thing’s look tells you that you don’t want to spend a second longer in the facility with it than necessary… even if it’s a place as gargantuan as this.
As you order it to be contained, you continue monitoring its behavior. It seems to slink around a bit, shuddering and adjusting to its form.
Then it peers directly at the glass between it and your team. Your heart stops.
It cocks its head. Then crouches down.
“Oh god-“ You don’t quite know what you think could happen, but you find yourself stumbling out of your seat in a panic. Still, too late.
The creature springs with impossibly high velocity, and breaches the thick glass in an instant.
The next thing you know, it’s pinning you to the ground. Giving you get a far, far closer look at it than you hoped for.
Its entire form is blue gel, appearing as though it’s perpetually melting. It has a beastly face with a long snout, brandishing jagged teeth. It’s almost like a crocodile, but more… mammalian. Most disturbing of all though, is its apparent lack of eyes.
That doesn’t deter the creature from focusing intently on you, rumbling and slobbering with apparent glee. You struggle futilely, but there’s nothing to be done as it dribbles its… matter all over your body.
You cry out. Maybe someone will help you… but they’re all too focused on escaping.
Not that you’ll want them for long, though.
Because to your shock, that gel feels… kind of nice.
You resist for a few seconds, but your efforts don’t persist for long. Its gooey, squeaky allure is just too strong.
In seconds, it smothers your entire body. Your sharp mind is reduced to mush.
The gel consumes your form. Your body contorts and morphs until it looks just like the other creature.
Claws, a snout, a tail, a hunched figure… of course that’s you. The perfect form!
You croon to your fellow gel creature, who returns the affection.
So much energy… so much power! You feel like you could bounce off every wall in sight.
You can’t see anymore, but that’s okay. You can still sense your surroundings…
Which include those fleshy creatures barricading themselves down the hall.
How icky… why would anyone want to be made of anything but wonderful malleable goopy gel? It defies reason!
Looks like it’s up to you and your friend to convince them. There’s no crevice you can’t fit through, no height you can’t reach.
Aperture Science is about to have one hell of a breakthrough!~
