I'm sure when these three explorers set out to the great Amazonian rainforest in search for ancient artifacts, they could have never expected to find anything of great significance, let alone an entire temple! They had stood in awe at it for so long, admiring its size, its craftsmanship, and its... oddly snake-themed design, serpents in carvings across every inch of the exterior. Was this temple dedicated to some snake entity of an ancient people? How had such a place remained so elusive?~
Normally, upon finding such a fascinating structure, the protocol was to inform Headquarters and regroup at a later date, so as to maximize safety and manpower, to leave no stone unturned, as it were. But there was something about the structure, something so charming, so alluring. The youngest of them, a red fox intern, had pleaded with his two superiors to wait, but they had brushed him off, walking toward it slowly, purposefully, as if under hypnotism. After a good several minutes of self-debate, the terrified fox reluctantly went in after them...
The temple's interior, evidently, matched the grandeur of its exterior. Adorned with jewels cut to perfection, and laden with stone by countless ancient furs, it was an architectural marvel to be admired. How old it was, the young fox could not say, but a thousand years at least, he surmised, had to be a fair wager. It was most certainly an incredible archaeological discovery... yet as awestruck as the vulpine was, it was also not without fear. Fear, indeed, that only seemed to grow ever stronger, as he delved deeper into the temple's walls. For as the torches - lit, he presumed, by his superiors - began to steadily become fewer and fewer, as the halls became darker, the vines thicker, the serpent statues all the more fearsome and numerous, and the sounds of the outside world all the more obscured, so too did the whereabouts of his companions remain hidden. Alone, and growing more terrified every passing second, his mind became plagued with doubts and confusion. His legs faltered, as did his hearing - just long enough to obscure the soft slithering of scales upon stone just behind him, and the muffled cries and wet gurgles that followed soon after...
It had been such a long time, the ancient serpent thought, since he had had such delicious visitors... and he would see to it that they would stay~
