This is actually very vaguely related to On a Lone world. If you've read or seen some of my stuff about it you'd know about the concept of highborn animals, mere beasts which by means of magic are blessed with an unnatural intelligence.
 
Here's three; Vicky (the vixen), Jack (The rabbit) and Todd (the tod in the background). Very uncreative, but newly intelligent animals don't tend to be.
