You open your eyes and find yourself inside an endless nothing. There is no light and yet you see your hands and feet as you look down. You become aware of a figure nearby. It is clad in a cloak of nothing like all the other nothing you can not see, yet you know how it looks instantly.
It is a robed figure with skeletal hands holding a scythe.
Your thoughts escape your mouth without ever speaking them “I didn’t know all the depictions were so accurate. It is like from a fantasy novel.”
Death is now right next to you even though it did not move. “Space and form mean nothing here. I look like this as it helps souls to know they are dead.”
“I am dead?”
“See? You didn’t even realize.”
“I guess I am. Memory is a bit fuzzy on the details though.”
“It will come to you. You have all the time you need. There are more important matters for you to attend to.”
You ponder for a moment what it could mean, when a faint light appears far in the distance. “Oh! The light. I guess I have to go there?”
“Correct.”
“What happens when I get there?”
“Bliss.”
“How do I get there?”
Death points at your feet.
“I guess that works. Anything else I should know before I head out?”
“All your good deeds light your way. All your bad deeds will get in your way. How long it takes is up to you.”
You look towards the faint glow and doubt creeps into your mind. “Did I do so little good? I would expect the light to be brighter.”
“At least you know which direction to go.”
“Not everyone does?”
“No.”
You take a few steps and look around, trying to make out details in the darkness. Something was there. Shifting and moving. Creatures? The ground itself? Almost impossible to see in the faint light.
“If you don’t know which direction to go, how are you supposed to find the light? This place is huge!”
“Infinitely so.”
You swallow. “I’m glad to have a light.”
“Me too.”
