Linge’s heart pounded in her chest. Her paws trembled, not from exhaustion, but from the tension building in her mind. The school’s sports yard was filled with students, all lined up, waiting for instructions from their coach.
Standing in front of them, with a firm posture and sharp gaze, was Coach Courtney—a young fox in a pink jacket. She looked calm, but her eyes studied every movement with precision.
“Alright, let’s warm up! Ten laps around the yard,” she commanded, blowing her whistle.
Linge nodded silently. She watched her classmates start running and copied them, making sure to maintain the exact same distance between her and the squirrel in front of her. She couldn’t fall behind. She couldn’t draw attention to herself.
As she ran, her mind twisted reality into something much darker. The painted lines on the ground weren’t just court markings; they were invisible barriers she couldn’t cross or else. The coach’s whistle wasn’t just a signal; it was the sound of a game beginning.
“I can’t mess up If I trip, if I stop…”
She didn’t finish the thought. She didn’t want to.
After warm-ups, Courtney split them into teams for a relay race. Linge’s senses sharpened. The yard felt like a battleground, each obstacle more treacherous than it really was.
Her turn came. The squirrel running toward her held out the baton. To Linge, it wasn’t just a simple piece of wood it was a lifeline. She grabbed it and bolted forward, her paws pushing her as fast as possible.
Then She tripped.
Everything stopped. The air thickened. Dozens of eyes landed on her, and a horrible realization hit her: she had made a fatal mistake.
Terror gripped her.
“No… no… they’re not going to eliminate me for this, right?…the players amount will start to low with me?”
She braced herself, waiting for the sound of a shot of the gun behind her head, the moment when it would all be over. She glanced around, searching for the masked enforcers who would come to take her away. But there was nothing, maybe was a signal of the destiny to stop this now!
“Linge, get up!” one of her teammates called.
She turned her eyes to Coach Courtney. Her pink jacket swayed in the breeze. Her expression was unreadable.
“She’s the one in charge of this game. She decides who stays and who doesn’t.”
Fear crawled up Linge’s spine. She couldn’t do this anymore.
She had to put an end to it.
Taking a shaky breath, she pushed herself up. Her legs felt like jelly. Her body trembled. She looked around—the other students were waiting, the coach still watching.
She took a deep breath.
Then, she stepped forward, maybe was her Aspergers talking but she finaly said:
“I refuse to keep playing this cruel and twisted game!” she declared, her voice steadier than she expected.
LINGE VOTED NO TO CONTINUE WITH THE GAMES INFRONT EVERYONE TO CHALLENGE THE TEACHER AND THE SYSTEM.
