Canonically, Dirt is an unofficial protector of the forest. However she’s very morally grey and doesn’t care much for ponies. In the AU, she’s an official Ranger and is forced to do her job with killing- I mean, snapping at anypony. That doesn’t mean she’s happy about it though.
