A scythe is a very unorthodox weapon, more a tool of farmers then of warriors and most often it is used by farmers turned warriors the same sort who would likely take to the spear because of previous experience with a pitch fork.
that said the usage of the weapon if wielded properly is most often why it can be devastating to single light or medium armored foes you swing it and pull forward hooking the blade BEHIND the target and aiming for the gaps that alot of light or medium armor have in the back near the hips, leather or cloth armor is useless against it, and even cheaper sets of chain mail may not hold up against someone with the right build and technique, the victim likely having their spine severed before they realize what is happening...at least for humans, with ponies depending on the combat stance it could have other uses...for example literally taking a soldiers legs out from under them, in short it is a weapon for shock, and awe, but it has 2 big time flaws, one is that because of the way its used it is only effective against small groups or single targets, and it is VERY slow because of the weight and the unwieldy shape compared to other polearms, as such it is best for a skilled user to have a secondary weapon (a spear or glave preferably) for use in larger battles
