Hunter tapped a way at his keyboard hunched over the desk glaring at the screen as his flying fingers produced about five typos for every sentence written. His semi voluntary work for the Digimon hunting agency (Hypnos, whose name he literally forgot the moment the card was removed from his vision) was a result of the item resting on his desk. A translucent purple lump of circuitry sporting a translucent orange circle and grips and a tiny screen better known as a digivice. A weight on his shoulder distracted the man.
“Watcha doin?” Calumon asked from its perch on his shoulder.
“Typing a report for my boss about the activities of the other Digimon Tamer, And the other Digimon period.” Hunter said before reaching up to gently scratch under his partner's chin.
“Oh yeah the invaders are starting to thin out.” Calumon said with a cheery tone leaning into the touch and the Tamers are really getting to know their partners.”
Hunter glanced at the private chats of a few of the Tamers and the activities they were getting up to that would not be making it into any report. “That’s one way to put that… Why did you call them invaders?” he asked letting the
“Cause they are?” Calumon tilted his head to the side and was so gosh dang adorable that his partner couldn’t help but smile.
“I mean you’re an invader too.”
“No! I’m Escaping! Those guys are here to attack.” Calumon pointed his ear-wings flaring out briefly as his big round eyes glared and he buttoned his bottom lip to his top in a scowl that melted his Tamer's crusty cynical heart.
“Okay you're escaping, and they're attacking. Now if you can tell me what you’re escaping from and why they are attacking we’ll make some progress.” Hunter said scratching the top of his head further disheveling his deep brown hair.
“Oh those are the same things.” Calumon said with its pout casually dissolving. “The D-Reaper.”
Hunter paused typing his report and pulled up the resource library quickly searching for the D-Reaper. “Okay why do you need to escape it and why are they attacking us and not it?”
“Cause the D-reaper is invincible! Even the toughest Digimon get deleted in an instant! The D-Reaper appeared out of nowhere one day and the Sovereigns called on the power of the DigiGnomes and created me but I got scared and fell through a portal. The Sovereigns had already figured out that the D-Reaper came from the Human world and so they had opened up lots of portals to send an army through and stop it here.”
“Given how long it takes for Digimon to travel from the Digital World to the Real world that must have been a long time ago…”Hunter remarked alternating between writing what he had just heard and scanning through the search results. “Hey Calumon, is this the D-Reaper?” he said, tapping on an image to bring it to full size.
The digimon nearly toppled off his shoulder, only its power to fly let Calumon catch itself and hide behind his head, trembling. “Y-Yeah that’s the D-Reaper!”
“Relax, it's just a photo of an input. This little image was a visual for an obsolete program.”
“Obsolete? What’s that mean?”
“It means it’s either been replaced or no longer works at all. Okay so according to this database the D-Reaper is a program used to shit down complex calculations and delete them to free up space.” Hunter said reading through the file copying text and pasting it into his rapidly changing report.
“Well then why is it going after us?” Calumon asked, leaning around Hunter’s head.
“The D-reaper was a state of the art automated program that would seek out any and all programs that had grown too complex for the system they inhabited. My guess is that when it ended up in the digital world it started following its base program and destroyed digimon because they were too complex. The good news is that is also exactly why the D-reaper is probably long gone.” Hunter said writing done his observations.
“Huh? How come?” Calumon said a paw to its chin.
“As computers evolved the D-reaper program never did, it couldn’t. Computers needed more complex programming, new languages were created to control them and new interfaces designed for them. There is only one computer in the entire world that can even run the D-Reaper and it’s unplugged in a museum in osaka. Meanwhile Digimon get stronger all the time as they evolve to meet the situation and overcome impossible odds. The D-reaper may have seemed invincible at first but I'm certain that was only for a little while. It probably went down not long after you all left. That’s why the number of Digimon appearing has been getting lower.” Hunter wrote out as he exposited to his companion.
“Really?! oh, that’s so great!” Calumon said, dancing across Hunter’s shoulder while the human smiled at the screen.
“So Calumon, what do you digivolve into?”
“Hmm what do you want me to digivolve into?”
Hunter plucked the Digimon from his shoulder and set him on the desk. “What do you mean by that?”
“Well… Digimon come into being because Humans wish them into existence. The games humans made created tons and tons of different Digimon and decided what they digivolve into. But I'm the very first Calumon so it’s up to you what kind of Digimon I turn into.”
“Oh like Guilmon or I suppose it’s Slickdramon now… still trying to figure out how that happened.” Hunter said, pulling open the logs again to look for any clues.
“Oh I know how it happened.”
“I’m only a little surprised. So how do you know what happened?”
“Cause i’m Evolution as a Digimon!” Calumon threw its little paws up in a big cheer. “When Digimon take on new forms I always know when and where and why!” Calumon cheered and Hunter’s eyes widened. He decided he wouldn’t be revealing that fact to anyone if he could help it.
“So Why did Guilmon become Slickdramon?”
Calumon sucked in a big breath and its body swelled strangely, taking on proportions not unlike a barbie doll. “Cause Takato wanted his dino girl to be all silky sexy instead of rough and tumble…” Calumon’s body shifted once again now to a buff macho figure “…so he dreamed up a new form for her.” Calumon returned to its usual moe blob form.
“Okay but why does that work….?”
“Because Digimon are born from human imagination and desires. Duh!” Calumon said giggling until Hunter lightly bopped it on the forehead with two fingers.
“So if I just imagine that you turned into some near perfect human lady just sex incarnate and swiped a card that you would just turn into that?”
No, silly.” Calumon said with an impish grin and Hunter deflated. “You’d need to draw it first, maybe write a little bit. The more effort you put into it the more clearly you picture what you want the better the results. Some Digimon can be changed just by thinking about what you want from them. Like the twins and their Impmons, Or Rika and her Renamon. Digimon can change themselves too but most of them won’t.”
Hunter glanced at the computer and thought about the stories he had read of the other Tamers sexual exploits. His gaze shifted back to the smiling little creature in front of him.
“I can’t wait to find out what you’ll digivolve me into.” Calumon said cheerfully. “I wonder what I'll become?”
Hunter opened the computer's art program and stared into the blank canvas. “Me too.”
