The enemy is at the gates and the war is lost. Even Connor says so and he's the king, so he should know. But Ciara doesn't understand why her mother has to be the one to stop them, or why they're talking about sending her away from the city into... what? Ciara has barely been out of her mother's apartments, and she's never been more than five minutes away from home before. Her father holds her in his arms and speaks softly to her for the first time that she can ever remember, and his words are soothing, but Ciara knows that when her mother looks angry like that there's no arguing with her. Ciara will have to leave, and she knows she will never see her parents again.

Thanks! She's actually an adult for most of the story. What happens to her as a child is just there to give a bit of background for the rest of it, and to explain a few of the details in the story. I had originally planned to have her still be a child in the novel proper, but I'm not very good at writing from that perspective and making it believable.
