Sunshroom and the Chimer


Sammy sat on the couch playing Astro Bot. Beside her was her dear friend Space. “Oh no!” Sammy leaned left, then right. “NO!” Her nubbed hands gripped the controller tighter as she focused harder than before. She screamed as Astro fell off of the spikes. “Darn it!” She slammed the controller on the couch, making Space bounce up and down on the couch, her helmet wobbling around on her narrow head. “I almost had it, Space. I see why Mia lectured me on this this purchase now.”

“Boop boopboop,” Space chimed, sounding shaken up. Her bright green eyes were rolling around her screen.

“I’m sorry, Space.” Sammy reached for her, wrapping her arms around the chimer. “Let’s get a snack or something.” Space agreed with happy chimes. Hopping down from the couch, the Sunshroom and sentient phone walked to the kitchen. It wasn’t an unusual sight for Sammy to walk around the house with Space; a chimer like her needed exercise. Her tiny legs made it a bit difficult, but Sammy’s legs weren’t any longer when put to scale.

“Sammy?” Mia was sitting at the kitchen table, decorating some cookies she had just finished baking. She could barely Sammy’s Yellow with orange polka dot head over the table's edge. “I have some leftover cookies. Wanna be my tester?”

“YAY!” She toddled over to a chair and climbed into it. Sammy pulled Space up to the table, where she sat and waited patiently, her helmet over her head. The large green eyes on her screen stared at the cookies like they were Aztec gold. “Can Space help?”

“If she thinks she can.” Mia was very tolerant of Sammy and her little friends. It had only been a few days since Space came to stay, and she had been a very pleasant guest. “You know, you never told me how you two met.” The blue Starshroom said, look at Sammy.

“Have I not?” She was shocked. Sammy looked at Space, who was too busy staring at the cookies, eagerly waiting. “It’s a thriller.”

“Well, tell me. I have about two hours before I have to work.”

“It won’t take that long.”

“Ok, so, I was visiting some friends in Germany, right? You never remember their names, so that’s not important. That day we had the BEST food in the world. Oh man, you should have been there! The rouladen was amazing, and I don’t like mustard or pickles, so that’s saying something, Mia! The schnitzel was great, too, but I love fried food. The noodles were so good, too, like, oh my god! I’m getting hungry just thinking about it!”

“The story, Sammy.”

“Oh yeah. That night, the news told us about meteor shower. ‘Holy cow, a meteor shower, we should go outside and see it!’ So, we all went outside. The stars were amazing! It's not like here, where we can’t see the sky because of all the lights. You’d think living in a tree would be conducive to that, but no! The forest was a little scary, though. See, we had to go through the forest behind their house to get to a good viewing spot, and there were a bunch of weird animal noises. I was holding their hand the entire time because I was scared. But we made it.”

“So, when we got there, it was amazing. Stars EVERYWHERE! Like, holy shit! Even some magenta smears over here, like in the movies; I didn’t even know it was possible. Luckily, we made it just in time. Suddenly, the meteors are flying through the sky. Like *foom* *zoom* *phew* Hundreds! I told my friends it was beautiful and they told me that they see these a lot, so it wasn’t as beautiful for them, but that’s ok.”  

“But then, we saw a big one! It looked like it was on fire! We watched it as it fell through the sky, and it was slower than the rest of them, too. But here’s the thing. It WASN’T A METEOR! It looked like it was coming for us, so we started running. It was super scary! Luckily, whatever it was didn’t hit us and went a few miles beyond us. I nearly had a heart attack, Mia!”

“I can tell,” Mia was listening intently while she was decorating the cookies. “Keep going.” Space decided to help Mia rather than sit there. She was holding a smaller bag of frosting and trying her best to squeeze some onto a cookie.

“Ok, so we dove onto the ground as it roared over is. I nearly shit myself. Don’t laugh. It was really scawy! Anyways, we heard a huge crash from over the hill. It looked like there was a fire too! I wanted to see what it was, so I ran to the top of the hill. You’ll never believe what it was Mia! Guess!”

“Was it a... satellite?”

“No, it was a UFO! It was big, round, shiny. It looked like they do in old cartoons! So we’re watching it, the flames are all around it, a bunch of trees are down, and it’s amazing. A real UFO! I wanna run down there and see, but before I get the chance, a bunch of vans zoom down there, and people are swarming out of them, like clown cars. They were dressed in shiny silver suits, too, like E.T.! They worked fast, too; before we knew it, they were carrying a box out of the UFO, and they had a fence put up around it.

“You sure you aren’t making this up?” Mia looked up from her cookies. “This sounds a bit silly.” Space shot to her feet and put her hands on her hips, her green eyes looking very agitated at the very idea.

Beep beep beeeeeeeeeep! cooOOOOOooooOOOoOOO.

“Look at what you’ve done. Would Space and I lie about this?” Sammy stood on her chair, barely as tall as Mia now. “Now I’m gonna let Space tell a bit of the story. I don’t know this bit.”

“Oh dear,” Mia looked at Space. She stood proudly in the center of the table. Handing her pouch of frosting to Sammy, she prepared herself for an epic retelling of her tale. A small text box appeared on the screen below her eyes, translating to English.

*For the reader’s convenience, Space’s speech will be translated*

*Yes, I crash-landed. I didn’t mean to, though; that was an accident. See, I was being chased by other chimers. See, when I was being chased, one of them shot my ship, and I was forced to crash-land on your planet. Of course, I didn’t expect your people to be so mean to me immediately. Those people came and threw me into a box! I debated contacting other Chimers for help, but I knew they were already on my trail, and that may only make things worse.*

“I’m confused,” Mia said, ”why are they after you in the first place?”

*Because I’m half alien.* Space pointed to her eyes. *See my eyes? They’re green. Chimers don’t have green eyes. I’m too different for them. I tried to run away, but that wasn’t enough for them.* Sammy piped frosting into her mouth, slurping the vanilla-flavored goop. *Back to the story. I woke up in a facility. Everything was white and spotless. Of course, I wasn’t alone. A ton of people were there, watching me. They wore silver, shiny suits. Not like I’m dangerous, but they must not have known that.*

Sammy slurped the last of the frosting in the bag. “And this is where I come back in!” She tossed the bag onto the table. “So, my friend and I were all like, ‘We should follow them!’ This was before we knew what they took, of course. It could be cool. We hopped into his car and we caught up to their trucks. It was late at night, and there weren’t a lot of people on the road though, so we had to stay really far back. You know, not look sus. Here’s the problem though. WE LOST THEM! I don’t know how they did it! MY friend is an expert driver. I can’t reach the pedals otherwise I would be too, ya know.”

“Right, Sammy.” Mia had refilled the frosting bag but kept it by her.

*Here’s what they did!* Space chimed in. *I overheard one of them say to turn on their camouflage. I don’t know how good it was, but it must have been pretty good to get away from you. I know that my ship has cloaking, but I have yet to see anyone on Earth manage that tech. But anyway. They poked me a lot. I was able to understand them thanks to my translation tech. They were speaking Russian! I have no idea what they think they were doing with me though. In the end, one of the scientists pulled out their cellphones, pointed to them, then I and everyone came to a consensus that I was a sentient phone. They aren’t 100% wrong.*

*After that I was hauled from lab to lab, more groups of scientists trying to get an idea of what exactly to do with me. I was surprised no one had come to get me yet. Not like I wanted the other Chimers to get me, of course, but it would have been nicer than being toted around as a discovery.*

“But how did you get here?” Mia asked.

*I don’t know.*

“I know what happens next, though!” Sammy raised her hand and wived it excitedly.

“Okay, you remember that time a month ago when everyone called off at the coffee shop, and you had to work all day? Well, I was wandering around Fortune City because I was bored. And you won’t believe who I saw. A guy in a shiny, silver suit! This was, like, a few months after my trip to Germany. I thought, ‘No way, that’s them.’ So I hid in some trash cans by the door and waited for some of them to come out of the door. It was super smelly and gross, but I needed to know. There was a loud crash, and one of them came out, panicking. They seemed frightened by something, so I dove out of the trash cans and into the closing door.”

“The place was so weird—completely white walls. I’ve watched enough horror and sci-fi movies to know a lab when I see one. And, of course, there’s a camera on the ceiling staring at me! It was too late to turn back or hide, so I waved and made my way through the building. I knew it was only a matter of time before someone came and got me, so I ran. It was super creepy. There wasn’t anyone in there. No one in the halls, I couldn’t see anyone in the rooms, real spooky.”

*Here’s what happened. They were doing more experiments on me. They uhh…. They tried to put cords in my USB port…*

“You never told me that!” Sammy reached for Space, hugging her.

“What exactly does that mean, though?” Mia looked confused.

“Mia.” Sammy looked at her pointedly. “Down there.” Sammy pointed downwards with her head. Mia mouthed, Oh.

*I’m ok though. It didn’t hurt or anything. It was SUPER uncomfortable. I do look like a phone, after all. I wasn’t charging like they were expecting me to, so they were trying a lot of cords. But, uh… let’s move on. Suddenly, there was a crash, and the roof came down on us. Dust was everywhere; we couldn’t see a thing. Then, I saw several glowing eyes. I knew they came for me. The Chimers had found me. The three of them who came from the ship looked like me. Neither of them had green eyes. Red, blue, grey, whatever. But not green. It was as I feared, though. They came to finish me off. ‘There you are, you trash. We’ll finish the job we should have finished a long time ago,’ they told me.*

“But then I heard the noise! Since I’m super brave, I ran to follow it and find out what was going on! I opened the door and found a thing that looked like a phone with arms and leg backed into a corner with a bunch of other ones aiming blaster things at it! ‘Hold on!’ I shouted as I ran for it. See, I ripped the helmets off of one of them, but it didn’t really do anything. All it did was draw their attention. Its red eyes were angry and staring at me. Then the others aimed their blasters at me.”

*I was so scared. But when they aimed their blasters at that short mushroom thing, I knew I had to do something. I jumped on the closest one and wrestled the gun out of his hand. I didn’t want to, but I had no choice. I looked away and shot him.  FLOOM FLOOM! The screen cracked…*

“Oh, that’s nothing compared to what I had to do. I had two of them on me. Those blaster rays stung! Luckily, they weren’t serious. I bet they didn’t expect to encounter too many beings that weren’t hurt by them. I flopped over on one of them. I heard a crack, and he didn’t get up. I felt bad, but they were all ganging up on one person! That’s not nice! The other one was shaking once I did that. I grabbed him and slammed him on the ground. Blood everywhere!”

*We chimers don’t actually bleed. It’s battery acid.*

“Is that why it burned? Oh. Either way, they were all gone. The room was a wreck, and only Space and I were left in the room.”

*I still remember what I asked you. ‘Are you gonna destroy me too?’*

“’No, I’m here to rescue you.’ Then we walked out of there before the police came.”

“Uh huh.” Mia nodded her head, looking at her watch. “That’s fun, you two, but I gotta get to work.” Mia grabbed a tray with decorated cookies in one hand and her purse in the other and headed for the stairs. “The leftovers are for you two to share!”

“She didn’t believe us, Space.” Sammy sighed but stood at attention frantically. Her stomach was gurgling violently. “Oh no!” Sammy jumped down from the chair. “Keep up, Space. I can’t wait.” Sammy frantically waddled out of the kitchen and up the spiral stairs. All that frosting she had eaten was wreaking havoc on her digestive system. Space leaped off the table and ran as fast as her little legs could take her, beeping and booping her concerns. “Oh, oh, oh!” Sammy barged in the bathroom, not bothering to close the door behind her. She knew that Space would just open it and come in anyway. Not like Sammy minded; she and Space were best friends.

Popping the flaps open on her overalls, she jumped onto the toilet and let loose. “Oh, good lord.” Shortly after she sat down, Space ran into the room, looking frightened. “I’m all right, Space.” Sammy panted as she gave a push. FRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT “Too much frosting,” Space closed the door and waited. With a smile on her face, she waited for her friend to finish her business and relieve some of that pressure. She booped, and beeped, and chirped. “No, be lucky you can’t poop. I don’t think it would be good for you.” PFFFFFFFFFT. “Mia’s gonna lecture me again.” FFFFFFFFFLRT. Suddenly, Space’s screen began flashing. Her eyes grew wide with alarm. “What’s wrong, space?” Space shot up, waving her arms frantically. Running up to Sammy, she pointed to her screen. A red blinking light appeared in the corner. The text box on the lower half of her screen appeared again. Sammy read aloud, leaning over to read it, “’They found me again. They’re coming.’ Wait, what?!” Sploosh. “When?” Space shrugged. “Oh boy. The Snuggle Mafia
Last in pool
Sammy the sunshroom and Space the Chimer are best friends. You've never seen a weirder combination than a mushroom and a sentient phone creature from Space. Wonder who they even met? This is the story for you!

Piggy505 has a lot of sonas and characters under their belt. We tried something different for this story. You ever listen to someone tell a story and they gush and gush and gush about it? I wanted to try writing it that way, not even stopping to write things like, "she waved her arms frantically" or other actions. It's a different take on my usual style, but we'll see if people like it. Piggy505 sure did for this story.
