Oz is not a technological land, and as Tattypoo,(good witch of the north, who gave Dorothy directions at the start) explained, they have been isolated from other nations by a desert on all sides (explained in my fan-fic as a product of an all-out thermonuclear war long ago. Many phenomena of Oz were caused by such, but magic also got into play..)
So don't blame Elphaba or whatever for talking about straw-stuffed mattresses.

About this point, something happened in the background. Ignore the action in the front & you may see it. There are 4 theories about what happens. (1)A large bird,put there for atmosphere,acts out. (2)A stagehand,realizing he's in the shot, runs to get off the set. (3)A naked woman is making love to some man. (4)A dwarf,fired from being a Munchkin, hangs himself ! The dwarf actors deny this.
