Ever notice how when Link grows up, he's suddenly wearing leggings? What exactly DID Rauru do when he was out for seven years?

The leggings make a little sense to me, since he's a man now and needs to cover up more. I'm wondering why Rauru pierces Link's ears. That's... a little weird.
