-Loathsome Laughs-
no. 3: Martians - Mars Attacks!
Something I've failed to capsulate in my countdowns is my love of the campy B-movie invaders from space genre that was prevalent in the 50's. It's one of my favorite eras because of how unabashedly cheesy it was! Give me some silly creature in a UFO in some idealized 50's neighborhood while eerie theremin music plays and I'm a happy camper and no movie does this better than Mars Attacks!
While the movie may not be regarded as one of Tim Burton's best, it's ability to perfectly recreate the charm of that era is sublime. In fact, the titular martians are easily one of my favorite set of movie monsters of all time. From their designs that expertly blend both creepy and silly elements-(yes I know they originate from the Mars Attacks card game, not the movie)-to their squawking voices, these guys just might be the perfect group of invaders. They have no real higher purpose, they simply exist to be intergalactic dicks and threaten the idyllic view of the world in hilarious fashion. That's all. I have nothing more to say.
