Halloween Countdown
-Sinister Slashers-
no. 2: Jason Voorhees - Friday the 13th

Jason, the undisputed slasher. They guy who made athletic gear a symbol of horror. He may not have made the cabin in the woods trope, but he perfected it. In many ways, Jason IS the slasher genre. He's what everyone thinks about when they think of 'slashers'... however, and I may live to regret this, I'm not giving him top billing here.

This may be purely personal bias for the next contender, but I do have a few reasons. Namely that a lot of Friday the 13th films are boring - there, I said it. A lot take forever to get going and the same can be said for Jason himself. He wasn't even the iconic character who know until 2/3rd's into his third movie. He was second fiddle to his mother in his first film and then he wore that stupid bag in part 2. It took a long while for the series to embrace Jason as the absurd juggernaut we know today and even then, it wasn't until his seventh outing when we got the incomparable Kane Hodder take up the mask. (Only to get snubbed for Freddy vs. Jason. Criminal!)

All this to say, these are purely personal gripes. Does Jason deserve to win top spot for slashers? Yes. I think he's an enjoyable killer, especially when he's allowed to be more brutish and over the top. He has a legacy that cannot be topped and I'm sure in years to come I'll kick myself for making him runner-up. But at the end of the day, this is my countdown and my opinion will sway things, that's just how it goes. The winner's spot has been a character I've always loved, even when I didn't respect the slasher genre. I find him to be superior and I think I'd be more upset with myself for not giving him the top spot so, there it is! This whole game is rigged, you can go home!
