no.5: Leatherface - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Next in line, it's slashers! Those methodically murderous madmen that ruled the 80's with an iron grip and admittedly, one of my favorite genres. I'm a simple man of simple pleasures, sue me. Unfortunately, this does mean that this sub-category will have some of the most expected entries, but that doesn't mean we can't have fun with it! Sometimes it's just about seeing an old, familiar face... worn on someone else's face.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a series I used to be heavily critical of; in fact I was heavily critical of the slasher genre as a whole many years back, but I've matured a lot in recent years and with it came a love for simpler things - like a home-cooked meal, these movies have a lot of simple pleasure but with some deep care put into them~ The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is honestly a masterpiece in how well it handles it's brand of horror. Never letting up and giving the audience a second to breath. There's no comfort, just constant tension... and then there's the sequel which is nothing but camp schlock and I love it just the same!

Sadly the series hasn't been treated too well and like many masked killers, Leatherface would scarcely have a returning actor to play him. Which is a shame given the love and attention Gunnar Hansen gave the role in it's first entry. Still, he ranks low only because there are other slashers I like/have come to respect more. Despite it all though, Leatherface thrives in the face of adversity as a horror icon, one that I'm well overdue in giving proper credit to.
