People like the older games better because they didn't need flashy graphics or fanboy-drawing characters *cough* Shadow *cough*. Now, personally, I don't have a problem with Shadow, and I loved SA 1&2..BUT, it's the fact that they played upon him until they were sure they would be able to make tons of money from him as a character, rather than the game he was in.
No, I didn't like Shadow the Hedgehog. Why? Because the whole game is about him being emo, and having no memory. There was no back story,the Villain was bad, the levels were not designed well, it was made for the sole purpose to make money from the people who liked Shadow. And, guess what, it worked.
Now, I'm not saying that was the only bad game, almost all of the Sonic titles on the Wii are bad. Just because you have motion control, doesn't mean you have to kill a game to use it. I don't really know why everyone hated '06 so much, the open world, ungodly loading time, and cut scenes that lasted forever might have been something..but I still liked playing through the levels.
My main point about the old games, would have to be the difficulty of it. You had very limited lives, you couldn't sit on level one and get as many as possible. and if you lost all your lives, you had to continue, but if you lose all your continues you have to start the whole game over. And, that alone makes it that much more rewarding when you finally beat the game. When I did it, I went to everyone i knew and rubbed it in all their faces, granted I was like 9..but whatever, I was excited, and felt that I made a real accomplishment.
Enough of my ranting, this is all just my opinion..people like what they like, and there's nothing we can do to change that.

Older games don't need new flashy characters because they already occur in the classics :) Now they just come back in the newer games with other new characters that are possibly one game only. Classic are what started it all. Never forget :3
