my headcannon has sounded off that he wears a big hood to hide his horns because of racial discrimination, because his race has super super magical powers and weaker races are terrified of them.(possibly due to large-scale social manipulation from various religious groups looking to remove anything that might potentially upset their influence) So he goes around saving people and pretending to be magical but not THAT magical.
My head won't shut up until I say it is so, unfortunately.
Oh, and the little beads are charged with magic ahead of time and used to cast spells, and they're tiny because that way they can't be charged with enough magic to cast suspicious spells that would draw attention. Sort of a convenient excuse for why he can magic, and also a convenient benchmark to not exceed in order to remain unsuspicious.
And he also has a fascination with antiques and artifacts and world history.
