Halloween Countdown
-Tiny Terrors-
no.5: Killer Tomatoes - Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
It's October again and man it feels good to be back! Like rewatching a long forgotten movie from your childhood, October/Halloween never fails to bring back feelings of nostalgia that-(in my opinion)-even Christmas fails to deliver! And there's no better metaphor for this year's countdown as rewatching old, beloved movies is exactly what we'll be doing. I think it's safe to say that the horror movie marathon is a time honored tradition of the Halloween season and despite being one I partake in every year, I've failed to give it it's dues when it comes to my countdowns, so I'm fixing that now!
So as we kick start this year's cinematic celebration, I give you the most esoteric blast from the past I could dig up; Attack of the Killer Tomatoes and to answer the already inevitable questions, yes, this is a film that existed. A series of films in fact and an animated series, which is actually where I have more familiarity with the franchise and while it is mostly forgotten to time I think it perfectly sums up the kind of camp, B-horror that defines Halloween to me.
Sure, it probably fits better in the 'Loathsome Laughs' category, but I find the humor of these is more in how the "horror" comes from tiny, inanimate objects... also I really couldn't think of anything else worthy to put into the 'Tiny Terrors' tier that wasn't obvious. I gotta have some unexpected entries in here! While I admit I don't have much exposure to the films, I do think it warrants a spot in history and this countdown if only for it's sheer absurdity -- also the original Gomez Addams, John Astin plays the mad scientist who creates the killer tomatoes in these films, so that has to account for something!
