Cups without handles are a long Chinese tradition! And they could be wider than traditional cups, making it seem more like a saucer. Interestingly though, drinking tea from an actual saucer was something the lower-class English did in the Victorian era– both so their tea could cool down faster, and so they could put a hardtack biscuit on the edge and soften it by sopping up some of the tea!
