With how huge the sea is, it's definitely not easy to find specific things on the seafloor without help from something... Or in this case, someONE. Who better to search the seafloor than a biomechanical submarine made specifically for that purpose? With far greater intelligence and autonomy than any true machine, and the ability to speak as well as receive radio messages, this living vehicle is just about perfect for the task! Of course, there's downsides: The living part of him requires oxygen, which he has no way to get from water, requiring him to surface every 40 minutes or so, and he needs to eat as well. Still, he's far smaller than a typical submarine, meaning a reasonably low food requirement, and he can eat raw fish without any issue, so food isn't much of a problem for him.
Despite being quite different from a normal submarine, this one can still carry people inside himself, comfortably fitting about 8, though providing air for them draws from his own reserves. Another potential downside of having passengers is that they have somewhat easier access to his internal organs - intended to make checkups on him easier. With control over his interior, though, he almost always keeps the door leading to them tightly sealed. He does still enjoy helping people in general, having a built-in hose he can extend from his mouth and use to give air to people diving alongside him. Said hose is also how he breathes, since he can't really go up enough to just breathe through his mouth.
When he's not on a mission, he wanders the ocean, happily exploring on his own and meeting people that happen to also be out there. Today, though, he's been tasked with tracking down a shipwreck, having a relatively easy time of it thanks to his sonar and pressure-resistant body. After a couple hours, he's found some debris on the bottom... He must be close!
