After leaving the safety and comfort of home in search of Umbra, Gleam finds her way to his family, a roving warband of vicious, uninhibited Digimon known as The Umbral Tide, so named for the potent virus that turned their bodies black as it robbed them of their memories.

(She gave him the nickname before she knew he was part of it, and didn't end up realizing until someone pointed it out to her about two years later. She's not the sharpest knife in the drawer.)

Lucky for her, they know better than to mess with the boss's girl, and she ends up welcomed into the pack to join them in searching for their missing leader. The Digimon that seems to run the band in his absence is a large BlackGuilmon, and though he is both powerful and commanding... He's also glitched, and can only say a single word.

Duty.

Well, the rest of the Tide thinks he's saying something much less dignified... Nonetheless, he takes a particular shine to Gleam and makes efforts to keep her out of trouble, training her in the ways of a rogue and easily carving out a place for himself in her heart over the course of her travels with The Tide. Gleam adores Duty and views him as a secondary father figure, and the familial affection seems to be mutual!
