Duchess is the female protagonist of Disney's 1970 animated film The Aristocats. She is the mother of Marie, Berlioz, and Toulouse.
Duchess is very elegant, beautiful, and ladylike, being the pet of an aristocrat. She is very devoted to her owner, Madame Adelaide Bonfamille. She is kind and friendly to everyone. She is both caring and protective toward her children and also tries to encourage them to develop into proper members of French society. She also is a connoisseur of music and presumably teaches her kittens to sing and play the piano.
Duchess is also shown to be slightly pacifistic, as she scolds her kittens for "play-fighting". She is sweet and compassionate and is willing and able to make friends with anyone, no matter their background. She also seems to show concern for others, as is evidenced when she calls out to Thomas O'Malley as he floats down the river after he throws Marie to safety.
Marie is a major character in the 1970 Disney animated feature film The Aristocats. She is a white-furred kitten who is the middle and only female kitten of Duchess, the older sister of Berlioz, and the younger sister of Toulouse.
Marie believes herself to be quite the little lady, and so tries to mimic the elegance and propriety of her mother, Duchess. As a result, she can be somewhat prissy and spoiled and is quick to tattle on her brothers when things don't go her way. Although Marie makes an effort to appear ladylike, she does enjoy the occasional tumble with her beloved siblings and has an insatiable curiosity once Thomas O'Malley opens her eyes to the wonders of Paris.
A hopeless romantic and daydreamer, Marie frequently is seen lost in her thoughts and sighing deeply. She also appears to be somewhat danger-prone, as she is consistently in harm's way throughout the movie. This may be because either her head is up in the clouds or because she is the kitten who has had the least practice of "biting and clawing", and thus the least capable of fending for herself in the wild.
Also, Marie is shown to be the most open and accepting of Thomas O'Malley and the most eager for him to become her and her siblings' new father. She loves romance as she eagerly watched O'Malley flirt with her mother and complimented on his poetry.
In The Aristokittens graphic novels, Marie's spoiled and prissy behavior has been downplayed in favor of her acting sweeter and helpful around others. She's very determined to make the Parisian Critter Cafe become very successful with the animals of Paris, and is mainly in charge of not only running the cafe but also running the pastry where she makes sweets and bread. However, she does make snarky comments to her brothers and the other animals depending on her patience.
