Start from the back and work to the front. Illustrator is better than any other vector package if you learn how to use it but I prefer Flash because I know how to use it.
Any smoothness you see in vectors is because someone was very careful to clean it up and make it look easy. It's not naturally smooth, you have to lay down and carefully bend the lines and edges and match them up and do work for that look.

Yes, if you have a copy of Flash anyway. Flash only exports 4000x4000 images. Also, I never found much of a use for pointlessly large images for most things unless you need a BIG poster printed.
