When I didn't want a drawing to suck, I often looked at what real artists had done and tried to adapt it to what I needed. This can be tough as most people with talent don't draw straight on faces since it makes things look flat and uninteresting. I draw straight on stuff because I can't do the slightly turned away look for crap.
Any ways, if I draw some thing while looking at some one else's art, I always give them credit.
