When maintenance on the outside of the space station has to get done, it HAS to get done, even if no suits are available. Luckily, one of the engineers just happens to be a dolphin with especially strong lungs, so he's called to get the work done. He's a little frustrated, since he'd been woken up for this, and he didn't bother to get dressed in anything more than shorts and his utility belt. With his safety line attached to a rail, he holds his breath and climbs along the outside of the station to the access panel that needs repairs.

Looks like this one is gonna take a while...

That has got to be annoying, getting woken up and having to go outside to repair something like this... and it's in space with no suits? Yikes! I bet holding your breath in space is painful...

Realistically? Holding your breath in a vacuum will probably kill you, with the pressure difference making your air expand way more than your lungs can handle.

In fiction though? It's pretty hot to me, and I always rule it as being safe to do.

*space, yknow how it goes, sometimes the space stations have to get some maintenence done on the outside of it, even if there aren't any suits ready. I was fast asleep in a sort of like bedroom and not knowing there is work to be done and 2 people are required to fix the problem...it wasn't until a dolphin came up to me, hearing the news on whats going on and trying to get me to wake up*

In the last second, the dolphin holds his breath, and just after that the air is quickly removed, making the room a vacuum again, though you'd of course have a chance to hold your breath before that.

Once the air is gone again, the dolphin waits a couple seconds, starting to blush quite a bit, then kisses you on the cheek. You feel a puff against you just before he does, the air being pulled from his mouth.

S: after taking a break for a year straight, I was finally ready to return to my duties in the space station, I was happy to be greeted by the dolphin I befriended up there, and I was hoping this time, there would be no troubles with going out to space... even tho I was scared something might happen again, 3rd time is the charm tho right?

L: The dolphin smiles as he meets you again. "Glad to have you back after so long! It's been a pretty slow day today so far, so I don't imagine there'll be a whole lot for you to worry about. We can pretty much just hang out for now."

S: "Oh thank goodness, cause if I have another one of those incidents occur, I don't know what I'm gonna do, probably quit doing this job... but it is nice to see you again"

L: "Yeah, I know how much you hate going outside without a suit... I really hope it won't have to happen again."

S: "I hope so too, I took a year off to rest and enjoy life so hopefully this stupid curse is lifted"

L: Before the dolphin can continue talking, his radio goes off.

Dolphin: "Oh, one sec." He listens... And sighs, looking over at you. "Well, apparently we're needed outside."

S: "Outside? What do you mean Outside?!?! No don't tell me...."

L: "C-calm down, you've got that one spacesuit that's reserved for you, remember? Nothing to worry about, it'll be fine."

S: "Right, if my suit is even there this time! I'm too scared to look, you go and get it for me..." I close my eyes, hoping and praying that my suit is there

L: "Alright, just give me a minute..." The dolphin goes off to check, and when he returns, he doesn't look particularly happy. "...Apparently it's not here yet..."

S: "...WHAT?!?!?" my eyes shoot open in shock
"No... no no no no not this again! Please not this again!!! PLEASE!!!!!"

L: "I'm sorry, I don't understand why this keeps happening with you... But, we've gotten through it twice before, we can do it again."

S: "No way! I'm not doing this again! They may as well just fire me now cause this ain't gonna happen a 3rd time!"

L: "You know how important it is that repairs get done when they're needed! Look, just this one last time, then I won't stop you from quitting if you want to. I'll miss seeing you up here, but I definitely won't blame you."

S: "I'm sorry but I refuse to go out there again! I just mentally can't do this anymore ok?? Jeez" I storm off to my room that's still up here and shut the door, clearly frustrated by all this, I decided to call Dan since I knew he wouldn't be busy right now and hopefully blow off some steam, thanking the heavens for cell service up here

L: I pick up before long. "Hey, buddy! What's up? ...Hang on, aren't you supposed to be working right now?"

S: I sigh heavily
"Yes but im probably not gonna, you remember when I told you about that whole incident where I had go out into space without a suit twice? Well guess what? It happened again! My suit mysterious disappeared and now I have to go outside again with no suit, I can't catch a break buddy..."

L: "Ugh, AGAIN? It's like they WANT to annoy you... I wish I could be there to help you, but I don't exactly have a way up there myself. Even Cirrus is busy today."

S: "Dang it!! Buddy I just don't know what to do, even if my treecko buddy was up here like last time I doubt he could help me, I can't mentally go through something like that again... when I took this job I thought it was gonna be safe! Clearly I was wrong!"

L: "They really don't seem to care a whole lot about people staying safe in a place without air, huh? I'm gonna look into that place at some point, that's weird."

S: "Definitely weird... something just feel off about this place... nobody seems to care about my safety, well except the dolphin that's my coworker, but he's a great guy and helped me out a lot, but now I don't think that's gonna happen"

S: "Well, the first time this happened I was alright for the most part, sure I was very terrified but he managed to help me out and I thought that was the end of it, the 2nd time I brought my treecko buddy with me and he was able to calm me down when this happened, but now it's happening for a 3rd time and I don't think neither of those things are gonna work on me mentally anymore, and the fact it's been a bit over a year since I've been in space"

L: "Then maybe you'll just have to find something else... I can't imagine it's gonna be easy, but you know how important that job is, you can't just not get it done."

S: "I know that, but this is ridiculous! Holding your breath in space is scary! Like really really scary... if this was underwater then maybe it wouldn't be so terrible but it's not"

L: "I'd be nervous about that too, I really don't blame you. I just really don't know what I can do to help... I can't exactly talk to you out there, there's no sound in space."

S: "Ugh, nope there's not... I may just have to get outta here and not do it at all, cause there's no chance of me going out there again with no suit on, it won't happen"

L: "You can't just not do it, what if someone gets hurt because you didn't do anything? To me, that'd be even worse!"

S: "Ugh your right! But still, I don't think I can so, it's my best approach...nobody will catch me, I'll even convince the dolphin to come with me...nothing will go wrong, I hope"

L: "I really think you shouldn't do that... But, I guess I can't really stop you..."

S: "I'm sorry buddy but I don't have a choice now, I can't mentally do this anymore, I'll call you later" I hang up the phone with Dan and exit the room to where the dolphin is

L: The dolphin looks over at you, having been sitting nearby. "So... You doing okay?"

S: "No, I'm not...I'm getting outta here, I refuse to go through this again and hold my breath in space, and I want you to come with me... don't you see?? This station is playing tricks on us! Maybe they've done this in the past with others and we don't know it! I told my friend to look into it"

L: "Wait, what?" The dolphin thinks for a moment. "...You know, the first time I was told to go outside without a suit, I thought it was weird, but I've gotten used to it... But, I've NEVER been offered a spacesuit. And you've never actually even SEEN the one that's meant for you, have you?"

S: "No I haven't! The boss said he was gonna have one custom made for me but I've never seen it... and you've never been offered a spacesuit either? That's just more clues to the puzzle! They are doing this on purpose! I bet there was a lot of people here who were terrifed to go out into space with no suit on, including me! We have to escape and find out the truth, and quickly before we get forced out there!"

L: "Yeah, let's get out of here and figure this out. Whatever they're wanting us to work on might not even be that important!"

S: "Exactly! So come on, let's move it!" hoping for the best, I start to walk towards the exit with the dolphin, hoping to not get caught and escape without any problems

L: The dolphin carefully follows behind you, trying not to make too much noise. "I hope someone just happened to leave a shuttle, or this isn't gonna work...", he whispers.

S: I whisper back
"Yeah, I hope so too..."
as they continue to sneak out, there was a shuttle left behind as they got to the main station! However, there was a slight problem, this particular one was ment for people who could breathe water, and it hasn't been used in a while, but it's still filled with water and it's the only shuttle left...

L: "Alright, this'll work... Oh, but you're not going to be able to hold your breath as long as I can, and we can't exactly drain that out without someone noticing the water..."

S: "Oh great, I thought I was gonna get away with no breath holding, but oh well...at least its water... still tho, your right I won't be able to last as long as you, what do we do? We have to get going before somebody spots us!"

L: "We just have to accept it, come on!" The dolphin heads to the airlock leading into the water-filled shuttle with you.

S: "Ugh, this is gonna suck..." I roll my eyes and sigh heavily
"Wait what if I drown?! I don't wanna drown!"

L: "There's got to be something in there for air-breathers that were going in it too, we should be fine." He tries not to think about how, if the people running the place don't care about spacesuits, they likely don't care about any sort of scuba gear either.

S: "I doubt it! But fine whatever...this is really really gonna suck, I don't wanna drown! I really don't!"

L: "I'll make sure you don't, don't worry! Even if I have to give you some of my air, I'll do everything I can to keep you safe."

S: I sigh
"...alright fine...I'll hold you to that, I just hope this shuttle goes fast or something... go on, let's get this done"

L: "Alright, let's get out of here..." The dolphin closes the airlock, which starts filling with water. "Remember, deep breaths!" The dolphin starts breathing deeply, knowing even he might end up getting pushed far by the upcoming breath holding.

S: "Oh boy..." I quickly start to take deep breathes as well, the worst part is I didn't have any goggles with me so my eyes were gonna sting from the water and just make this worse

L: The dolphin looks over at you. "Just realized, you're probably going to want goggles for this... Sorry. Hopefully we can find some in here."

S: I whine at that
"There better be goggles in here or this is gonna be extreamly uncomfortable"
the water by now is almost at the top

L: "Okay, just hold your breath and keep your eyes closed for now, I'll look for some goggles." The dolphin holds his breath and dives, searching the airlock.

S: I whine again, but I knew I had no choice, as the airlock starts to fill to the top I take a last deep breath and hold it before letting it submerge me, closing my eyes as I didn't want my eyes to sting right there

L: It takes about 15 seconds, but the dolphin finds some goggles! "Alright, got some!" He blows some bubbles into the lenses to get the water out, then carefully puts the goggles on you. "You should be fine now."

S: I slowly open my eyes, and instead of pain I was able to see perfectly fine, I sigh out bubbles in relief and give the dolphin a hug

then as the airlock opens I swim out, looking around to find some kind of air source

L: There doesn't seem to be anything for the moment... The dolphin swims into the shuttle and quickly starts setting it up to leave the station. "Just give me a bit to get us going, then we'll look for air. I THINK we'll be fine even if there isn't any."

S: I whine yet again, clearly I was very unhappy about all this as I pinch my nose shut to keep holding my breath, hoping air is nearby

L: The shuttle is soon launched from the station, heading back toward Earth. "Okay, we're on our way. Hang in there..." The dolphin searches around the room, doing his best to find at least something to help...

S: I start to look around myself, my cheeks already turning red from the anxiety building up within me

L: After a bit more time, the dolphin finds a rebreather! "Oh, perfect! Here!" He holds it out to you, hoping it has air in it.

S: my eyes to wide at the rebreather and I immediately take it and put it in my mouth, but unfortunately it didn't have any air in it, and I ended up sucking in a little water as I immediately take it off and cover my mouth

S: I wasn't mad at this point, I was full on disappointed instead, I whine as I felt the cold water around me, shivering a little too, I even started to visibly cry with how much this world seems to hate me, none of this helping keeping my air in even as I cover my mouth, my face faintly blue, and we're not even halfway there yet

L: The dolphin looks around for any other way to give you air... Finding a decently-sized indent in the ceiling, he blows bubbles into it to make a little air pocket. "Okay, this should actually work!"

S: noticing the air pocket I immediately swim up and gasp for breath heavily, panting a bit as I catch my breath in the relatively fresh air
"Phew...man I have the worst luck possible it seems like! Ugh"

L: The dolphin is barely able to get enough of his head up there to still talk to you. "This is gonna suck for me too... But this'll at least mean you'll never have to go out in space again."

S: "Yeah, I'm kind of looking forward to that...I don't ever wanna work in space again after this... I really don't wanna go back underwater tho...I'm in no mood..."

L: "We shouldn't have to go under again, it's not like that'd let us last longer off the same air. Just do your best to stay calm so you don't use as much oxygen..."

S: "I certainly hope I won't have to, I'm a lot calmer now that I'm in the air instead of having to hold my breath..."

L: "This IS a bit better, yeah... Even though I'm a dolphin, I'm not all that big on swimming. Sounds weird, I know, but I've just always felt that way."

S: "Hey I get you, there's nothing to be ashamed about for that, it does sound a little strange but eh, I don't mind"

after a bit more minutes pass, the shuttle is now more the halfway to earth, and by now the people back at the space station notice us gone too, trying to communicate on a PA system in their shuttle

L: Someone over the PA: "Why are you two leaving!? You've got work to do!"

The dolphin smiles. "...I think we're done with working on the station, actually."

S: I smile as well, smirking too
"Yep! I think we are! We don't wanna work for you anymore!"

L: PA: "Wh- Come back! You can't just quit without giving us notice!"

Dolphin: "Well, too bad. Could've just given us spacesuits, but no, you had to be annoying about it."

S: "Yeah what's up with that?? I thought you guys had a custom made one for me, but it wasn't even there!! We aren't coming back and I'm not holding my breath in space, period!"

L: PA: "And why exactly do you even need one? Everyone can hold their breath just fine!"

Dolphin: "That proves it, you were never going to let us use spacesuits, were you?"

S: "Yeah! Now that's suspicious in it's self! And what about the people who are deathly afraid of doing that?? Like me! I'm scared of doing that!"

L: PA: "Oh, suck it up, you'll get used to it eventually! Everyone does!"

Dolphin: "Oh, sure, once you've given them TRAUMA they stop complaining, huh?"

S: "Yeah! That's just mean! You know what just shut up already! We're not coming back unless you have a spacesuit, and we are reporting you!"

L: Whoever's on the PA is clearly nervous about being reported. "U-um... Look, I'll put in a word with my boss, but I can't promise anything..."

Dolphin: "Yeah, like that's gonna accomplish anything..."

S: "Uh huh, you guys better be scared cause we are shutting you down! We're almost to earth! Oh and PS, we took your underwater shuttle, thank God for this air pocket..."

L: Dolphin: "Definitely a good thing I'm aquatic, or I don't think we'd make it!"

PA: "Ugh, that's one of the more expensive ones... Fine, do what you want..."

S: "Hehehe!!!!!"

they are just about to land back on earth!

L: Dolphin: "Looks like we've got just a minute or so before we land... Good thing, too, it's getting a little hard to breathe now..."

S: "Jeez, yeah your right... fresh air...I miss it already"

Soon enough they land!

L: "Alright, finally! Hold onto something, I'm gonna go open the door and all the water's gonna be pouring out." The dolphin takes a quick breath and dives.

S: "Wait a minute what??? Hang on!" I was so caught off guard by what he just said that I wasn't holding onto something

L: The door of the shuttle opens, and the water starts rushing out! The dolphin can't manage to get a grip on anything in time, and he ends up being pulled out with it all! "O-oh jeez!"

S: I wasn't able to either and I get pulled out with it all too
"Whoaaaaa!!!"

eventually the water all escapes the shuttle, and once it does the shuttle automatically begins to refill itself with water once the doors close and we get out

"Jeez! That was rough...we could have just swam out through the airlock but whatever"

L: The dolphin looks back at the shuttle. "...Right, we definitely could have... But anyway, that's done. Now, let's go get those guys in the trouble they deserve to be in!"

S: "Heck yeah buddy! Let's get it on! We're gonna sue them for so much money!"

I giggle mischievously at that, taking off my goggles and putting them away as I get up, ready to report the space station for what they've done

L: The dolphin stands as well. "So... Where do we go for this? Can't say I've ever had to do something like this before..."

S: "Well... I think we should go to the police first and file a report on them, and we have the evidence, my phone was recording our little conversation that we had with that person in the PA system, so we should be able to get this done pretty smoothly"

L: "Oh, perfect! I didn't even think of that! Alright, we'll head right over and let them know." The dolphin starts looking for the nearest police station with you.

S: "Always a step ahead of you my friend!"

eventually we find a police station

L: Once you and the dolphin arrive, the report is filed easily, and the police get a copy of the recording you made. An investigation into the space station is done, finding that you're far from the only person that was promised a spacesuit and didn't actually get one. And, a couple weeks after making the report, you see on the news that, because of you and the dolphin, the company that had been running the space station got shut down!

S: me and the dolphin celebrate our victory, the place was shut down! And we even sued them for a lot of money! I told Dan later one and he was thrilled about it as well, now I can rest easy knowing this kind of thing won't happen again, and I was not about to trust another space company like that again
