There's a very good couple of books, one called "Weilding a Red Sword" and the other called "Being a Green mother" That has a pair of characters that meet up in a travelling gypsy show in India. Both books are told from the perspective of one of the pairs each..but there is mention of a Snake charmer girl who coats her body in oils to prevent acids from digesting her and puts herself into a trance, then lets the trained snake swallow her whole. After it slithers offstage, she is then pulled out of the snake and woken up.
