Shortly after returning from their visit to Angel Island, Cream, Vanilla and a very anxious looking Mocha find Tails in the kitchen, sitting at the table and working on a project of some kind. Taking a brief moment to glance down at her daughter, Cream laughed under her breath seeing Mocha fidgeting with her fingers. She could still remember the feelings Mocha must have been going through, she'd felt the same when she was her age and wanted to ask Vanilla for something special. She set her sights on Tails, leaning down to give her husband a quick kiss on the cheek. "Hello there handsome, I missed you."
"Well I missed you too." Tails smiled. "How was your trip?"
"We had a good time, although it's hard to relax and let the kids play when you can hear Knuckles and Pakal sparring with each other all the way on the other side of the shrine." Cream crinkled her nose briefly with distaste.
"What is it you're working on there, Tails?" Vanilla asked.
"Oh, this? It's my old arm cannon from back when I was a kid. It got me out of a lot of jams back then, but after the whole Emerl thing, it got worn out to the point it wasn't safe to use. I'd been meaning to get it fixed, but there just wasn't the time before! Now I'm gonna get this back in action, and I'm even adding in ammo cartridges which will change the nature of the energy blast. Y'know, electricity, ice, heat, that sort of thing."
"Always tinkering." Vanilla chuckled. "By the way, Gemerl could use a tune up when you get the chance to visit. He's been mentioning his joints are feeling stiff lately."
Tails laughed. "Duly noted, I'll add that to my to-do list!" He then turned to look at Mocha, who hadn't said a word since they arrived. Normally Mocha always greeted him with a giant hug and a kiss, so something must have been going on. "And what about you, sweetpea? Is everything okay?"
Mocha looked up from staring at her shoes, her hands behind her back as she briefly glanced back and forth between Cheese and Chocola who were both giving her encouraging looks. Taking a deep breath, Mocha finally spoke up. "Daddy, I wanted to ask you something really important."
Tails frowned, sensing his daughter's nervousness. "You seem tense, sweetpea. Are you feeling alright?"
"Oh, yes! I'm okay! It's just..." Mocha gulped, and much to her father's shock, she suddenly got down on her knees, folding her hands and looking up at him with the biggest puppy-dog eyes she could muster. "I really want to have my own chao! Can I please have one, Daddy? Pretty please? I promise I'll feed it and play with it and take really, really good care of it always! Please Daddy? Please please pleeeeeeease?"
The fox genius was stunned, seeing his young daughter begging him with a pleading grin on her face, the chao on either side of her joining in on her request. He briefly turned to Cream, receiving a silent, subtle nod indicating it was okay with her, which meant the decision was entirely up to him. He turned back to Mocha, her anxiety obvious. "Well Mocha, I don't know. Having a chao is a big responsibility. After all, they aren't as high maintenance as some flickies can be, but chao still need A LOT of attention."
"I'll give it all the love it needs and even more! Please Daddy, let me have a chao! I'll do anything!"
That did it, his heart melted in an instant, as he smiled and nodded at her. "Okay, sweetpea. You can have a chao."
The girl's eyes widened as she gasped and leaped for joy."Yaaaaaay! Oh thank you, thank you Daddy!" She giggled with impossible to contain happiness as she leaned and gave her father a big hug and a kiss. "I can't wait to finally have one! This is the new best day of my life!"
