What an interesting idea. Of course... the elves, even though they are talented in magic and have centuries to perfect themselves in whatever they want... they are surpassed/outmatched by numbers and wave tactics. So, they use magic to create a servant race that can reproduce much faster and is much more expendable... it's like creating robots to send to war. This reminds me of the Uplift Saga sci-fi books, and the TTRPG (tabletop role-playing game) book manual that GURPS made (GURPS Uplift).
