Well that certainly is a suspicious story. It stretches belief that someone came, killed the elephant and left before the cops were coming up the stairwell in only the time it takes for a smoke. Either she killed him, or she's lying and was gone for longer than that.

I was going on the assumption that he wasn't shot before she left to have a cigarette, which would only take 5-10 minutes, because surely she would have noticed the elephant herself on the way out. If she really didn't see him laying there then that does add more uncertainty to events.
