That is a good question. I didn't spend a lot of time trying to learn a lot of Japanese simply because I didn't go off-base a whole lot and when I did, I stayed close to the base where the Japanese people spoke good English. Learning to speak Japanese isn't that hard. Basically, if you remember that most of their syllables are made up of a consonant sound and a vowel sound, you've got a good start. Also, not all vowels are pronounced in their language as you can see from my pronunciation example of itashimashite.

LOL. Not writing system, writing systems. They have 4. They are called Kanji, Hiragana, Katakana, and Romaji. Romaji is Latin lettering spelling Japanese words. I'm not going to say which is which but, I know one is used to write Japanese words, one is used to write foreign (usually European) words, and I don't remember what the other is used for.
