My PoE-themed fan art is finally finished! Despair is happy to hang out with his friends, but is curious: what is this video game they were playing? What’s with the strange outfits, are they from the game? Milly gives him a New Year’s gift: the unique amulet Replica Dragonfang’s Flight with +3 to level of all Despair skill gems. Wait, there’s actually a skill named Despair in the game? - Despair asks with widening eyes. - And it’s - no longer able to contain his excitement - a chaos curse? Okay, now I’m interested.

Milly, the joyful and silly red wolf, is playing Tornado Shot Deadeye this league and has found many Replica Dragonfang’s Flights this league, but each and every one features a different skill, so finding one with the same name as her friend was quite lucky, and maybe a good sign. On the very first day of the league (the temporary “season” in the game), she found an exceptionally, exceptionally lucky ring, and for a few hours she was more wealthy than all the other four combined together. She didn’t get a unique belt from a set of divination cards that specifically awards unique gloves, but she doesn’t let something silly like that stop her!

Lash, Milly’s best friend, is playing the same build as her, but uses it for the new flavor-of-the-month strategy: abyss spires in Cemetery maps. Abyss is a game mechanic where the underground lightless creatures sometimes invade the in-game areas, and her very helmet (it replaces her own vision with that of the magical eye socketed in the helmet) was acquired in one such level. She has found hundreds upon hundreds of precious orbs, valuable divination cards, and the most rare and powerful crafting material in the game… a lock of hair.

Eifa was, on paper, playing the same build and the same strategy as Milly. However, that’s not how she earned her items and valuable drops: she enjoys the game without actually playing the game, as in clearing levels or killing bosses. Because why even do that? Buy a 5c item from someone, perform a craft that costs 30c on it, sell the result for 50c. Buy nine 0.1div consumable items from different players, sell all nine to another player for 1div. Buy items that appreciate in value over the course of the league, sell them next week for 1.3x the purchase price. “But you aren’t even playing the game!” - say all the jealous characters with gear much less expensive than Eifa’s. She brought the iconic symbol of a profitable in-game trade: 5c and 2 Necropolis maps.

Werra, on the other hand, rejected shooting arrows with bows, and played a good old boss killer build that got a powerful new tool: strength stacking Energy Blade Storm Brand of Indecision Inquisitor. Now that’s a build! It’s not hard to guess who was carrying boss fights for all the soft, squishy bow girls. Out of five hardest bosses in the game, Werra has killed each one several dozens, maybe even a hundred times. While the rest of the team was racking up millions in currency, Werra was racking up millions in damage!

I wasn’t drawing much in December because I was playing the newest update to one of my favorite video games - Path of Exile: Affliction! I did know that there was a furry chat channel in the game, but didn’t know that there are actually so many players there. I met Milly (the furry) there (we probably traded some items), then he opened a Voidborn Reliquary (an in-game item lootbox) and got a 80div (very, very powerful and expensive) Ventor’s Gamble (the ring Milly is wearing), and at some point I decided to draw his characters in addition to mine. I loved drawing items from the game - I drew way more than in the image, and at way better resolution, but it didn’t fit into the final result.
I’m going to play Path of Exile some more - it’s very unusual for this game to be in a good state, I’m saying that as a long-term player. I do make time for drawing every day to avoid losing skill, but it’s not enough to post consistently - you either play PoE or draw furries, 24 hours in a day is just not enough for both.
I have a lot of things to do in 2024! The big overarching goal is actually getting good at furry art. For something more interesting and unusual, there’s learning 3D sculpting to assist my 2D art - have you heard of “Blender low poly sculpting”? I would also prefer no more once-in-a-generation crisis events, there were already 2 in the last 4 years… but also, if that’s what it takes, bring it on, I can take it.
