Sonic is in need of the chaos emeralds to handle a new threat that has come on to the scene, but is currently in the possession of only one, it would normally be quick to speed around and get them all, but the rest of the emeralds are in the hands of other mobians rather than scattered around. But pressed for time Sonic knew he'd just have to negotiate the best he could for the gems.
