When Shema's parents celebrated her first birthday, her father wrote a '1' on her birthday hat. Seeing this a year later as a two-year old toddler, Shema assumed this meant she was the best daughter and wrote a '1' on her hat again. This continued for several years until she realized her mistake and stopped doing it, but that only resulted in her father doing it instead, insisting that his number one favorite daughter wear a hat with a '1' on it.
Her parents threw her a small graduation party after she returned from college as an accomplished young adult. Waiting for her was a celebratory university cap with a plastic '1' on the front, courtesy of a father with a sense of humor.
