i find this a very good narrative idea; make one of the protagonist a bitter dropout, a bum in deep shit, but with incredible talents and potential; in a situation that is desperate and require desperate measures; «load the spring» even more, but not to the point of breaking, and use the character resentment as a «meater» for the story; zummeng do NOT want this thing being a linear, predictable tale of evil / good confrontation and cliché comic characters. i DO NOT know what will happen, but i expect the plotline and the characters will keep being complex and interesting like they are now.
(hope this make sense. sorry for garbled language, not being a native english speaker)

you're fine. From what i've seen so far...he DOES indeed have potential. It's just that he EXPECTED and ASSUMED he would be chosen as a Guardian  at one time, and when she passed him over because he was missing the vital point. (probbaly the TRUE DESIRE to care, understand, and WANT to help others). Instead, because his family pretty much always had a guardian chosen from them, he...and they expected him to succeed. When he did not, they simply tossed him to the curb and paid more attention to his brother, whom they saw as the next natural one to succeed. The Tree still senses that he has that potential to do great things...if he can but open his heart and understand. Hence the blinding of the eyes. At least.....that's my perception of what's been going on.

I can see Nigel's point but i can't agree with it. Mira is right that what he's talking about is control but it's even worse than that and Nigel is the perfect specimen to show it.
He was guided by his parents and everyone else around him into knighthood. Not because he chose it or because he thought it was the right path or because he genuinely wanted to help others but because he believed it was his purpose and his destiny.

He was taken by the had from birth and walked along the path by everyone he believed in and never once learned to think for himself or ask himself why he was pursuing this status or why he was walking this path. He just thoughtlessly went where he was told, trusting the path of destiny to take care of him so he didn't have to take care of himself.

So it's not surprising then that as soon as all of that fell apart and collapsed he ended up on the streets a homeless beggar and thief. He's still taking the paths of least resistance. He's not trying to improve himself or change himself in any meaningful way, he's still waiting around for his destiny to come pick him up and carry him to his assigned place in life. He's still refusing to think or to decide for himself who and what he should be.

Destiny is repulsive idea and so too is Fate.
It is tragic, and awful, and depressing to believe that you were born to serve and fulfill a purpose.

Wholeheartedly agree.
And to top it all off - Life isn't roses and sparkles all around for everyone equaly.
Real Life is a struggle for happiness.
Sad, but that is the truth.

Nobody owed to be carried around by hand so they won't ever experience anything bad and traumatic happening to them.
As much as I dislike this concept of "happiness through suffering", the Life itself doesn't give much other choice - someone must suffer for others to be happy.
And if you want to be happy, you've gotta struggle by yourself to reach your own type of happiness, figure it out through hardships and struggles.

Those who've never experienced struggles and any traumatic experiences in life, might never actually grow up.
And Nigel is a shining proof - the only traumatic experience he ever got - broke him, and he doesn't allow himself to grow up, unless his old life he got used to, gets back to "its rightful place".

Gods and higher beings might guide mortals through life, if the mortals wish to hear and accept said guidance.
But not even most gentle and caring god will waste their time and power on some ungrateful and spiteful shmuck.
Especially not Goddess of Life.

What is funny is that the spiteful schmuck suddently got put back on track when he was needed and blinded. the "hands off" method didn"t work, and do she took a more forceful method.

witch is hilarious, because if fate or destiny didn't exist, why do nigel needs to be here ? kinda defeating the point isnt it ?

Edit: i'm not saying he was right to be stagnating for years or end up a homeless looser out of spite, he could have done literally anything else of his life.

but since things are foretold .. eh!

As I see it, he could've found any other purpose for himself in life, if only he'd try and look around, instead of closing himself down into a turtle shell, marinading in his hate and spite, cuz parents quit paying attention to him.
Luna spoke just a few pages ago, that she tried to help him many times before, but he refused her help time and time again, quite possibly not only Luna have tried to help him, but he felt entitled to beig a Guardian and didn't see past his own Ego.

Luna said that her visions are a blur and she no longer could predict much ahead.
Perhaps she saw other possibilities that were ble to arise and stop Chaos in its tracks, but as Fate goes - there's numerous ways it could come to fruition.
Destiny isn't written in stone, and lways changing, interweaving.
I believe that Rah'Jan might posess some kind of premonition abilities as well, and was killing or corrupting those who might be a threat to him.
Or just plain and simple - all that went against Chaos didn't prevail, so as Luna said - Nigel is her last hope, last person she can rely on.
She was hoping he'd see his own destiny or find his purpose in life on his own, but he kept himself blind internally, so she made him blind physicaly, in order for him to look inside for an answer.

It kinds of remind me of oedipus and the wheel of time. and if fate works the same way there ... he didn't really had a choice. he would always end up blind, and he'll always end up there no matter what he did.

if you prefer, he could do whatever he wanted between beats, but in the end, he would still be doing what is required of him in the end, even if "Fate" needs to punt him in place. (i know he is a character and has no free will anyway and has to be like that for the story to happen, but hey! interesting)

And it still is funny to me that the one not worthy of being a guardian then and still not worthy to be one now (regardless of the outcome of the future adventure)  is basically kept being brought forcefully into it by his own fixation and inaction and by the godess will and visions of a fate "not set in stone".

Well, mayhaps he didn't need to be blinded, bit somethig HAD to happen to him in order for Nigel to open his own heart and mind to his hidden abilities.
And again, Luna used all of her resources that could somehow manage against the Chaos, while waiting for Nigel and others to find their path on their own.
They couldn't so "fuck it, we ball", and throw them all together into a group.
Sounds like a regular DnD party to me. XD

It's very telling of Tristan's background how he's guarding his bowl from attackers and then does a covering move as soon as the raised voices come out between Nigel and Miralle.  (And note that none of them seem to have actually tasted Chili's creation yet.)
