More than likely you were introduced to hypnosis through media. TV shows (X- Files, Power rangers) Movies (Dracula, Hocus Pocus) and especially cartoons (The Jungle Book, Sonic, Totally Spies). But altered mental states and themes involving hypnosis, bewitchment, and mind control have existed for thousands of years in mythology and more!
Oftentimes it's used as a simple plot device in modern television, but there are also entire works of literature that revolve around it as a theme. If you want to read some fiction about hypnosis. give these a try: "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" by Edgar Allen Poe "Trilby" by George du Maurier "Pharaoh" by Boleslaw Prus "The Manchurian Candidate" by Richard Condon
